If their careers were to end right now or within the next 2-3 years, who do you think are the HOFers playing right now?

My initial thoughts included:

Greg Maddux

Chipper Jones

Tom Glavine

Trevor Hoffman

Randy Johnson

Manny Ramirez

Ken Griffey Jr.

Alex Rodriguez

Pudge Rodriguez

Mike Piazza

Pedro Martinez

any others?

Oh, and let's go ahead and get it out of the way:

Kent Merker

GEOVANY SOTO

Adam Dunn

derek jeter (sportswriters love him)

Regardless of sportswriters loving him, I think he deserves it. His numbers are already better than every other SS in the HOF with the exception of Wagner, Ripken, and Banks (who really only played SS half of his career).

What about a guy like Todd Helton. Sports writers just seem to have ignored him...case in point:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/awards_2004.shtml#NLmvp

note: I do live in Denver but do not like the Rockies.

Helton is going to need several more years of solid production. The "Coors" bias is going to hurt him. So I think he needs to get to one of those statistical milestones like 3000 or 500. His position hurts him too. You better put up some sick nasty numbers if you want to get into the HOF as a 1st baseman. He does have a very good WARP3 after just 10 seasons: 87.2 (4 points higher than "the most feared hitter" Jim Rice).

Jeff Kent for sure.

Jim Thome for sure.

Alou might get in.

Delgado

Lofton will get some votes, I wouldn't bet on him getting in though.

Vizquel could be borderline.

It's interesting to look at how good Chipper Jones really is, compared to the other modern HOF 3rd Basemen (I'm including Santo):

Player AVG OBP SLG OPS+ AB R H HR RBI WARP3 FLD%

Mike Schmidt .267 .380 .527 147 8352 1506 2234 548 1595 157.3 .955
Eddie Mathews .271 .376 .509 143 8537 1509 2315 512 1453 145.0 .956
Ron Santo .277 .362 .464 125 8143 1138 2254 342 1331 119.9 .954
George Brett .305 .369 .487 135 10349 1583 3154 317 1595 135.7 .951
Bro. Robinson .267 .322 .401 104 10654 1232 2848 268 1357 114.9 .971
Chipper Jones .307 .403 .546 143 6898 1296 2117 386 1299 91.5 .954

Jeff Kent for sure.

Yes. I think so, given his position.

Jim Thome for sure.

Probably.

Alou might get in.

Not a chance. He's nowhere near the numbers he needs (only 2117 hits & 332 hr), and there's nothing otherwise exceptional about his career.

Delgado

He's got the power numbers, but that's about it. Because there is nothing really exceptional about his career other than the power, I think he'd need to get to 500 to be given a lot of consideration. And even then, it seems likely that HOF voters are going to bump 500 up to 600 or something as THE power milestone, given the current offensive era.

Lofton will get some votes, I wouldn't bet on him getting in though.

He should merit a lot more consideration than he probably will get. I'd vote for him. A 110 WARP3 for a runty outfielder is pretty badass.

Vizquel could be borderline.

If Ozzie Smith is in, then Vizquel should be too. Their numbers are literally identical. The offensive era is probably going to hurt Omar though.

This is ridiculous. Did you ever see Omar do flips out onto the diamond? I didn't think so. How can you compare the two? In addition, were you just badmouthing the Great Jim Rice? You're going straight to hell!! Did you not know he was the most feared hitter of his day? If you want to find out just ask any insufferable ***** of a Red Sox fan; they'll tell you.

Yeah, after thinking about it for a second I guess Alou doesn't have a chance.

I think Delgado will get in though. He'll have the 500 HR's, and look at his career line. It's pretty solid. His comparables are McGriff, Thomas, Bagwell, Thome, etc. During his peak (98-03), he was one of the top hitters in baseball. I'd vote for him.

Bagwell & Thomas are superior to Delgado. I think Thome is certainly the best comparison.

Even if Pujols was to retire today, I think he'd have to go in given the production he's had.

Billy Wagner should also have a strong chance.

And also, I'd say that Magglio Ordonez might have a shot if he hadn't basically missed two years. Heck, he might have a shot anyway. I don't think people realize the kind of career he's had.

Has anyone mentioned Vlad yet? He's pretty close in my mind.

Vlad would easily be mentioned as a future HOF. I don't think there is any doubt. However, for the purpose of this discussion we are talking about players that are practically already there if their careers were to end this year or the next.

I understand the topic.

My list likely inclueds all of these

Greg Maddux

Frank Thomas

Sammy Sosa

Barry Bonds

Chipper Jones

Tom Glavine

Trevor Hoffman

Randy Johnson

Manny Ramirez

Ken Griffey Jr.

Alex Rodriguez

Pudge Rodriguez

Mike Piazza

Mariano Rivera

Derek Jeter

Pedro Martinez

All of those should be locks. I understand that due to the steroid issue, players like Bonds and Sosa might be left out. But, I think that entire list looks to be HOF quality to me.
