Seriously, Murton in CF is a better idea.

One has to imagine that with all the consternation over the center field position since Corey petered out, if the Cubs at all felt Murton was a viable defensive option in center field they would have tried it by now beyond one emergency inning.

I would be upset if we gave up anything likely to even play in the majors for Byrd. Let alone good players like Murton or Gallagher...

Oh, I'm not trying to say Murton as a CF is a viable alternative. I'm just saying Murton in the 10 games a year you want to give Pie a break in CF is better than Byrd anywhere on the team.

I'd be shocked if Pie starts more than 140 games next year. Even if he starts the season without a platoon partner, Lou isn't going to put up with his putrid bat against left-handers for long.

That might actually depend on whether or not the rest of the offense sucks against LHP. If we're any sort of decent, maybe Piniella just leaves him in and lets him takes his lumps.

There's no excuse for this if the Padres want Murton and Greene can be had. None. Forget Byrd, forget Bedard...trade for Roberts and Greene, sign Lofton, trade for Burnett.

Man, I wish this was a video game and not real life.

That would imply the Padres were actually wanted to trade Greene.

True, it's a jump, but given hi refusal to extend his contract and their desire for Murton, it does beg the question. Obviously, Murton wouldn't get the deal done alone. Maybe throw in Patterson and Cedeno as well?

I'd be shocked out of my mind if thats all it took.

I'd let em have Theriot if they wanted him instead of Cedeno. And I would probably give up Gallagher too.

Somehow I think Towers and DePo can figure out that Greene and Headley/Hairston>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Theriot or Cedeno and Murton. I'd think we'd have to give them a real SS in return, one who fits their stadium better. Someone like Jack Wilson. I think BTB posted it a while ago, but a 3 teamer with Bay and Wilson going to the Padres, Greene coming here and a boatload of prospects going to the Pirates would work.

Nobody in their right-non-Cub-Mind wants Theriot except maybe as the 11th man in an 11 man deal.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal says the Padres are now targeting Matt Murton as they continue to try to fill their hole in left field.

Murton is available, but the Cubs don't know if they'll need him later to pull off a bigger deal. He's also in play in the Marlon Byrd talks with the Rangers.

May as well throw in Marshall too if the Pads are offering something good enough.

2007 Marlon Byrd = 2006 Mark DeRosa

Rudy Jaramillo is a genious

so your saying we should trade for Byrd then considering Derosa had continued sucess after leaving Texas.

Murton in center field is not a horrible idea when considered with the Byrd-ternative. A number of lefty-mashing corner outfielders play some center when they shouldn't. Maybe not a lot, but look at Ryan Spilborghs, or however you spell his name. That dude is no center fielder. Yet, yeah, he's played there. Or Cody Ross. Not a center fielder, he still gets played there. I doubt Murton is going to look any worse in center than those two.

No, I'd actually rather have Lofton than Byrd, I just wanted to point that out

I hate this move. Byrd is not equal value for Murton. I really don't get the "Murton doesn't seem to have a place on the Cubs" logic, just because the OF corner spots are locked in. I'd much rather have Matt on the bench and get his 150-175 PA's as the fourth OF.

I really get the feeling the Cubs are getting cold feet with Pie, maybe given his tepid winter league performance. If so, I'd much rather sign Lofton than trade Murton for Byrd. They better act fast though, looks like Kenny is close to signing with Milwaukee, which would suck.

Amen.
