Very descriptive blogger with a lot of information versus this post with two sentences. Unless you have anything to back up your claim, I'm gonna go ahead and continue to assume that it's true.

Some of the people on BCB are claiming that the modus operandi @ HJE is to "make things up."

I'm just confused. I'd like to believe behind it all that Hendry is a free-cursing regular guy who has thought many of the things we all think but just doesn't say them in the media. But it *is* a blog....

The people at BCB tend to assume the worst of any site about the Cubs that isn't BCB.

Hendry was one of my high school football coaches back in 1981. The quotes sound just like how he talks. Back then, every other word out of his mouth was a swear word and this was at a Catholic HS.

Here are some examples of Hendryisms circa 1981:

You have kind hair....the kinda hair that grows around a monkey's azz.

To a student who was being difficult, in class: I'll stick your head up your azz and roll you down Bird Road like a bowling ball.

When he was at Creighton, a co-worker was a pretty active alum and got to be friends with him. Once he saw my co-worker sitting in one of the front rows and said to him, "I'll be up in a little bit". Hendry proceded to get thrown out of the game on purpose and sat in the stands with my co-worker. Once when a pitcher was struggling, he went out to the mound for a visit and told the pitcher "you know what....you're getting laid tonight" and then turned around and walked back to the dugout. The pitcher got out of the jam.

Having known him for two years, back in the early 80s, the quotes from the luncheon sound just like the things he would say.

Enjoyed the article, it was an excellent read but I didn't care too much for the constant use of the F-word. Nevertheless, I came away with a new appreciation for Hendry.

This really aggravates me. There is no "constant" use of the f-word. You were forewarned and I wish you would have quit reading after the first or second swear word. If you can't appreciate the intent with regards to Hendry's candidness then you had no business reading the article, anyway.

I refuse to take stock in anything printed from a guy who goes to ballgames with bologna sandwiches wrapped in wax paper.

Look I am no huge fan of Hendry, but you aren't giving him enough credit. Kenny Williams does have a plan. It just almost always backfires. Your counter argument will be that the one time it worked they won a World Series, and your right. But that was just a needle in a haystack. Can you look at that 2005 team and tell me that you thought they'd make the playoffs much less win a World Series. His plan last year was to acquire a bunch of unproven flame throwing arms for the bullpen. How did that work out? Laughable. His plan this year was to target the top 4-5 FA outfielders out there. How did that work out? Instead he was stuck trading 2 of their top prospects for his slugger, a move that wasn't bad at all but still damaged his already bad farm system.

Trust me, I know Hendry is no better. We've often joked about his plan being to copy the model of the previous World Series winners, or acquiring a million weak hitting 2B, or signing relievers to high priced deals. Your right hes not a great GM. But to compare him to Kenny Williams and say that Jim Hendry isn't at least a good a GM as Kenny, its ridiculous. Kenny joined the Sox in 2000 and managed to ruin one of the most promising young teams in recent memory. He has made the playoffs once since, the flukey 2005 title team. While Hendry has his mistakes, he turned around a bad 2002 team into the team that had the Cubs closer to a title than ever before. (I will agree that like Kenny's 2005 team, it was a bit of a fluke, and was carried by the pitching staff that was already there when he took over - even though he scouted and developed a lot of those players), then managed to dismantle it when he realized it had serious flaws and has manged to rebuild it into another team. Anyways, I'm rambling, but my point is, don't use Kenny Williams to compare favorably as a GM to Hendry.

A brief comparison from 2002-2007:

GM 'A'- 474-498(20 games under .500) 2-95+ loss seasons, 0 90+ wins season, 0 WS Appearances

GM 'B'- 511-461(50 games over .500) 1-90 loss season, 2-90+ win seasons, 1 WS Victory

I'm extremely skeptical too. My B.S. meter was pushed into the redzone at JH's alleged comment about Farnsy's two "discoveries".

well, if this post is true, and the blog true, I woud agree with the blogger. I alsow would love to buy Hendry a beer, if for no other reason but sheer entertainment.

I believe MacPhail was still GM in the offseason before '02.

And Williams has done a spectacular job of setting up the White Sox to be awful for the next couple years.

Correct. It was during the 2002 season that he stepped down as GM and promoted Hendry to replace him. That happened at the same time Don Baylor was fired as manager and replaced by Bruce Kimm.

I'd love to believe this is true. I mean, if I heard Jim say of all it I would have no trouble believing that is how he feels. When you remain silent for so long this sort of thing builds up. I don't blame him for being frustrated (even if some of the frustration is of his own creation). The Prior thing is very believable, IMO. I think Prior hates this organization.

Just talked to a friend of mine who was at the luncheon. He said it's all 100% true. He also said Hendry sounded pretty ticked off when he talked about Prior.

And you can counter it...how?

I have a friend who was at this event until the very end. I sent this person the blog and they denied that any of this happened. My friend would have no reason to lie to me either. Believe me or don't believe me...whichever you choose. I just don't buy it based on someone who was there.

It was a very fair portrayal of Hendry. And, if anything, it might have been slightly flattering.

And you were there to witness this? Just asking since I know someone who was there.

Does not mean as the GM of a major market team that he would be so candid with the everyday fan because he wouldn't. That is career suicide and I believe he knows better.

Trading for Steve Trachsel is career suicide. This is nothing by comparison.

Tyrants friend at the luncheon says it's true, RedIvy's friend at the luncheon says it's false.... Other's supposedly at the luncheon says "true", others familiar with JH's past personality and neighbors of JH stating the same....

I'll tend to believe JH was dropping F-bombs and being forthright in a relaxed/non-media covered event.
