He made use of some good connections to get opportunities and then made the most of those opportunities. One the other jv football coaches and the jv baseball coach was Paul Maneri. Paul Maneri is the current head baseball coach at Notre Dame. His father, Demi Maneri, was the long time head coach at Miami-Dade community college. Demi asked Hendry if he wanted to help manage a summer league team in Maine, I believe. From this, he got an opportunity to be the head baseball coach at Creighton. He took Creighton, hardly a traditional powerhouse, to the college world series. Hendry's connection to the Cubs was through Ed Lynch, former Cubs gm, former Mets pitcher and Miami Columbus HS graduate. I know Hendry went to the Marlins, as a scout, when they started in 1993. I don't know who Hendry knew at the Marlins or if he got that job solely from his success at Creighton. Former Marlins 1B Orestes Destrade is a Miami Columbus grad but I doubt he had anything to do with Hendry working for the Marlins as a scout. My guess is that Demi Maneri provided the connection at the Marlins.
