According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Juan Gonzalez is attempting a comeback and the Cardinals may be interested in him.

Gonzalez is 38 years old and last played in the majors with the Indians in 2005, when he injured himself running the bases following his very first at-bat. He's reportedly working out in Puerto Rico and has looked good enough to catch the Cardinals' eye, but remains a long shot to have any sort of fantasy impact.

I guess they have no plans to ever sign someone who isn't a comeback project.

This coming from a fan of a team who just resigned Chad Fox.

Yes, but Chad Fox is one comeback project. The Cardinals are trying to field a whole team of comeback projects. There's a difference.

Which of us will be the next to win a World Series?

Who do you think? We haven't won squat in a 100 years...I'd never ever pick us over anyone else.

This move makes no sense unless StL is getting moved to the AL. Strange. :-k

(Clarification: I don't suspect a move to the AL - I'm just wondering if the Cardinals are confused.)

it's desperation, sure, but it's not their fault that Encarnacion took a ball to the eye socket

Aaron Miles is unfortunately still part of the organization.

Anyway, this is really stupid. I can see LaRussa sending Barton back to Cleveland because Juan guesses right on two fastballs off a fringe reliever.

I'm starting to get the sense that they have delusions of contention.

I really hope it's only the on-the-field guys that feel this way, because if Mozeliak thinks Miles and Izturis are a step towards winning the division then we're in big trouble.

The Cardinals and Yadier Molina finalized a contract today that cements the young catcher as a cornerstone of the club and rewards him for his defensive

presence.

The club is scheduled to announce a new contract for Molina at an 11:30 a.m. press conference at the Millennium Hotel. The length of the deal will be announced at the time, though the sides have been discussing a multi-year deal in recent days.

The deal allows the parties to avoid an arbitration hearing.

Molina became arbitration eligible for the first time in his career this offseason, and he seemed headed for a considerable raise.

When the team and Molina’s agent exchanged salary figures last week for arbitration, both came in at least triple his previous salary. The team offered $1.85

million, and Molina’s rep submitted an argument for $2.75 million, five times the catcher’s 2007 salary.

The 25-year-old catcher has been the Cardinals’ starter at the position since inheriting the role from Mike Matheny after the 2004 season.

MLB.com is reporting that it is for four years, no money mentioned.
