The Rangers are expected to announce the signing of Jason Jennings on Thursday.

ESPN reports that he'll be guaranteed $4 million. He'll probably be able to earn considerably more than that in incentives.

How depleted is the Houston rotation?

How horrible was the trade they made to get him?

I never was a fan of Taveras or Buchholz, but I get the feeling they're going to regret trading Hirsh.

...and Patton, for that matter.

It's official:

Rangers signed RHP Jason Jennings, who had been with the Astros, to a one-year, $4 million contract.

Jennings can double his salary through incentives, but it's still surprising he didn't do better. He's more likely than the other rehabbing free agents to give a team 180 solid innings in 2008. Unfortunately, since he'll be doing it in Texas, he's going to be a poor bet in fantasy leagues. Texas currently has a rotation of Kevin Millwood, Jennings, Vicente Padilla, Brandon McCarthy and probably Kason Gabbard.

Wouldn't you guys have rather seen this guy over Leiber as a Cub?

Was he at all interested in coming here?

I think it's safe to say any free agent would be interested in coming to the Cubs. There's no reason to assume otherwise.

Jennings has had one year out of the last 5 with an overall ERA under 5. Part of that is due to the parks he has had to pitch in, sure. His second best ERA number during that time away from home is 4.86. He hasn't been good at home or on the road in 4 out of the last 5 years! To add to that, he's coming off an arm injury.

Jennings is younger than Lieber, and that's about it. Otherwise, there is nothing to indicate why Jennings would outperform Lieber this year. Lieber has consistently been better than Jennings, both at home and on the road. Jennings allows way too many baserunners, and that problem has stuck with him his entire career.

I don't know about that. Jennings grew up in Dallas and went to Baylor. He wasn't too far from home with the Rockies and Astros, plus he just signed with a team right in his backyard. It could be possible that he wanted to stay close to home in Texas rather than head elsewhere.

After all, plenty of other teams beyond the Cubs would have been interested in his services (see: St. Louis). Why didn't he sign with them?

Really depends on his health. If he is fully healthy I like him more than Leiber. He was actually pitching pretty well last season before he got hurt.

Perhaps nobody else was interested in him.

If that's the case, then that raises a rather large red flag in my mind regarding how productive he could be next season. At least we know Lieber will be ready come Spring Training.

Are you referring to his 2 starts in April?

I remember when I liked Jason Jennings as sort of the poor man's Jake Westbrook. That was not a wise assessment and I don't even see where I came up with that now. It probably didn't help that I was a bigger Westbrook fan than most people. I thought he would've had a better 2007 than he did. Oh well.

When I first saw the report I thought the same about Lieber. Then I looked up Jennings stats.............. I'll take Lieber at this point.
