z. I can't see Hill pitching a complete game period, much less a shut out

Mark Prior has thrown over 200 innings since Carlos Zambrano's last shutout. Mark Prior has thrown ZERO innings since Rich Hill's last shutout.

This topic was just who would throw the first complete game when it was made last year, not the first complete game shutout. That's significantly different.

I'll say Z for this one in a close call over Hill.

guh?

Yes, Rich Hill threw a 9 inning, CG SHO in 2006, a year where he was averaging 5 2/3 IP per start. Blind Squirrel, meet nut.

Scott Eyre throwing a complete game shutout would be a blind squirrel finding a nut. Hill is a very good starting pitcher who has as good a chance as almost anybody, and definitely any Cubs pitcher, to throw a complete game SO.

We did this in 2007 and miraculously it was Jason Marquis, I believe only baseball7897 got it right...

Yep. Here's last year's thread. That didn't include a shutout... But Marquis threw one anyway. Results look surprisingly similar. Rich-Z-Lilly-Marquis (most to least votes) for both polls.

sure he's a good pitcher, but he's also a typical Cubs pitcher; racks up high pitch counts early and gets yanked by the 7th. i'm not discrediting his stuff

Z will do it on an opening-day beatdown of Milwaukee

Last year he threw meatballs (again) on opening day... And afterwards he said something along the lines of "Next year, I'll ask Lou to put me second." We might actually see Lilly start game 1.

Hill actually had two complete games in 2006. Admittedly, the second one was rain-shortened.

In some of Marquis' crappier games I honestly wished he would have been left in to "take one for the team" and save the bullpen. These would have showed up in the stats as complete games, but not the kind a pitcher would be proud of.
