Still disappointed that "Hawk" or Lee Smith didn't get in but I was wondering when the Veteran's committee might vote on those veterans, that are still eligibile to be voted into the Hall of Fame. How many more times does Ronnie have left, to be voted in?

Yeah, I don't think there's a time limit on when he can elected - The fear with him is how much longer he'll be around in order to see himself get elected.

Seems to be unlimited. Here are the rules: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veterans_Committee

He is inching so close, next time he might miss it by 1 vote.

Hey thanks guys. I appreciate it. It makes me feel better to know that there is no time limit but I agree with "Roast" I just hope that Ronnie gets in soon, so he can enjoy it.

when do we find out about the veterens????

There's no veteran election this year, I think. I think the revamped election begins with the next class.

Correct. They voted on managers and executives this year, players next year. I think he gets in this time.

The omission of Ron Santo is the most egregious mistake ever made by the Baseball Writers Association of America. They should have inducted Santo 20 years ago, and that they overlooked him throughout his 15 years on the ballot is a shame. I sincerely hope that the new Veterans Committee rights the error quickly. It will be a boon to their credibility and a honor for a man too long left outside the hallowed halls of Cooperstown.

i quote this not as a cub fan but as an admirer of the game, and a desire that those who are most deserving of the highest accolade are recognized for their greatness.

vote him in, morans.

Can't we as fans start the same line of thinking that East Coast writers have about Jim Rice?

Let's just start calling Santo the most-feared hitter of his day and see where that gets us.

I hope he's around to see himself get inducted. And then see the Cubs finally win the World Series that same year.

He could live another 30 years and he'd still be smiling.

I'm going to think positive and agree with "NC", I think he gets in next year too. I just wish as fans, we could start some movement or campaign to help him get elected next year.

the difference is that santo actually deserves to be in the hall of fame; rice doesn't.

It'll get the press telling everyone that "most feared hitter" is a meaningless phrase used to hype up Ron Santo, but that Jim Rice actually was the most feared hitter of a generation.

Mike Schmidt recalling the game, where the Phillies came back to beat the Cubs 18-16. Forget about the game, what I'd like to hear from Schmidt is what (besides jealousy) he and other members of the Veteran's comittee, have against Ron Santo. I'd like to hear why this "cry baby" has repeatedly voted against Ronnie's induction into the Hall of Fame. I remember reading a story a couple of years ago and Mike Schmidt was bringing into question Santo's stats. Schmidt may have had more homers but Ron Santo was by far a better fielder, and a better overall third baseman. Just the name Mike Schmidt, makes me sick. Didn't Joe Morgan also vote against Santo?

From what I recall reading Schmidt's jealosy isn't against Santo specifically, but rather the idea of the Veterans' Committee letting anybody in. I remember he made comments to the extent that, if a player wasn't good enough to be voted in by the writers in 15 tries, they don't belong and adding them dilutes the honor for those who were elected legitimately. I'm not sure if Morgan's thinking is along the same lines or not.

I love Ron Santo, but Mike Scmidt was clearly better.

it's unhealthy for the veteran's committee to be stocked with players who don't want anyone else at their position voted in (Morgan, Schmidt, etc.)

Did you just say Joe Morgan and think in the same sentence?

Player A) 15 seasons and mediocre outfielder: 83.2 WARP3

Player B) 14 seasons and excellent infielder: 119.7 WARP3

I'm going with B there.

Appreciate your input "NC" but Tomy, wasn't Ronnie's fielding stats better than Schmidt's? I thought I heard that Santo's numbers were often compared to Brooks Robinson's. I think on the "This Old Cub" DVD, that Brooks says that Ron Santo deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Maybe somebody with alot of bucks (not me) could start a campaign, buying copies and send them to the members of the Veterans committee? That might help.

Errors and fielding percentage don't always tell the whole story, but...

Mike Schmidt: 313 errors in 2212 games at 3rd, .955 FP%

Ron Santo: 317 errors in 2130, .954 FP%

Brooks Robinson: 263 errors in 2870, .971 FP%
