If anyone who went to or is a huge fan of any of the following schools - and is interested in writing about them on a Web site (albeit for free) - PM me. I write for a fans-only sportswriting website and my 'boss' asked our current Midwestern writers to find Big Ten writers.

(Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Northwestern, Minnesota, Indiana)

I can't say anything bad about the big 10 because I just heard a rumor we might be going there.

seriously?

Just from some boosters with some knowledge about the school...a heck of a lot more than I have. The academic and sports seem to match up well and this might also be a go to heck (from Big 10 people) to ND from what I've heard.

Boy, that would teach us, all right.

no, having all big ten teams refuse to schedule ND would teach them, however

Well, ND and Michigan are contracted to play until 2031, so that's out. In my opinion, if ND stopped playing the Big Ten, good riddance.

how would you fill the other half of your schedule?

You mean 3 games, and somehow I think there are other teams besides the 8 or 9 that currently play us yearly that wouldn't mind it too much.

oh, im sure lots of teams wouldn't mind playing notre dame every year. can never use too many wins.

I'm sure that's what the Sooners figured would happen when they came to the stadium in 1999 to face a crappy ND team that went 5-7 that year.

Actually in all seriousness I think they're scheduled to play each other again in like 7 years or something. So that should be fun at least.

That was a game that we had all but sewn up, but a young team choked it away.

We did win the national championship the next year, do you know what that's like.

Yeah it'll be Derrick Washington. He should be pretty good, from what I've heard and what reporters are saying about him. The best part about him is the fact that he's a very good receiver out of the backfield, something that MU didn't have with Temple last year. I'm not sure how he will do carrying the ball, but I suspect he should be pretty good, and that there shouldn't be much of a drop off, if at all, with him back there replacing Temple.

It also would surprise me if he didn't have more total yards than Temple did last year.

btw, Andy, your attitude towards the Big 10 is EXACTLY why people hate ND fans.

Why Big 10 people hate ND fans! For the Big East, that hate would only help us and has.

That's because ND doesn't play any Big East teams (in football), so their "we're better than everyone and don't need you" attitude doesn't rub you the wrong way. The Big 10 has had a fairly symbiotic relationship with ND (Michigan, Purdue and Michigan St. mostly, with PSU having some history), yet fans like Andy constantly say "whatever, we don't even want to play you", etc.

ND has been playing Big East teams for a while (Pitt? WVU around the turn of the century? Syracuse?), and the reason we dumped BC from the schedule is mainly because they ditched the Big East under cover of night. Kevin White, before he left Notre Dame (thank God), was working on getting 3 BE teams on the schedule every year (the same amount as our 'half the season' Big Ten schedule).

And it's not that I don't appreciate the fact that the Big Ten provides our September schedule. I just dislike the conference and most of their fans for basically the exact reason they dislike us (think they're bigger than they are, especially Purdue and MSU). Not playing the Big Ten is not feasible anyway because we're contracted to UM until 2031 and MSU and Purdue basically in perpetuity.

Also, my attitude towards the Big 10 may be why Big 10 fans hate us (BTW, it bears repeating that that conference had its chance to have us and instead blackballed any of them from playing us), it doesn't explain everyone else in America.

On another note, it should be only another couple of weeks or so until I can officially post the week 1 thread. I can't wait for the season to start.

33 days until the first Tennessee game on Sept. 1.

When I hit media day Saturday, I'm going to be going crazy til the season starts.

Looks like just one man's opinion though. He doesn't cite any polls.

I'm surprised to see Tennessee that high (10th) and Alabama that low (8th).

I would have put Bama ahead of, at least, Oklahoma, Miami and Texas. Possibly as high as fourth (kicking Florida down a peg or two).

And I respect the heck out of Bear Bryant.

Bama? Hated? I don't see it. They're been absolutely irrelevant to most of the country for a long time now. If I had to guess the teams on this list, they probably wouldn't have been in my first 15 guesses.

Miami should be higher..they've been hated by a lot of people for a long time now. Florida State should be on that list. I've still noticed a lot of hatred for Nebraska even though they haven't been on the map for awhile.

There aren't enough people out there who hate Florida State. We're not a bunch of arrogant bastards (UF fans) or thugs (UM fans). We're just simple rednecks who enjoy a good football game.

I still stand by Bama. Maybe I had them a bit high (my Tennessee bias showing I suppose), but when the entire South hates you, you're hated by a whole lot of college football fans.

The problem I've had with Florida State has been the media hype surrounding them. It's decreased lately, but through the 90s and early 2000s few teams got the media hype Flordia State did.

It bugged me like heck that the Seminoles were so heavily favored by many to beat Tennessee in 98. Not sure what the official line was, but I got the feeling the Vols were, for some reason, heavy underdogs heading into that game.

Well, when you accomplish something no other team in CFB history has done (15 straight Top 5's), you get some media attention. I'll warrant it was without merit in the 00's, but I have no issue saying it was correct in the 90's.

Something interesting about the UT game for you to chew on (especially if you're a gambler). Before the Fiesta Bowl, Tostitos printed 135,000 UT National Champs bags, and only 40,000 FSU bags. I'm not saying things are fixed, but that seemed a bit fishy compared to the lines.

Also, I think that game ends differently if Wienke is playing QB instead of the Rooster (Marcus Outzen).

If you were a Bama fan, you'd accuse Phil Fulmer of cheating. . . but you're not a Bama fan are you?

And the game is different, but I think Tennessee still wins with Weinke starting. With the Syracuse and Arkansas games as my evidence, the Vols were destined to win that year. They were really, really good too.

oh andy, what was kevin white like?

He'll be a good fit at Duke where athletics (and certainly football) take a backseat to academics. I just disliked him immensely because of the ridiculous 7 home, 4 road, 1 neutral schedule template he was trying to get installed (basically guaranteeing we couldn't add any more marquee matchups to the sked - and rumor is that Alabama was one of the interested teams stonewalled by that ridiculous idea which really pisses me off), the lack of movement on the renovations to the Joyce Center, his insane Weis contract extension, etc. etc.

He's best suited to a school like Duke. And I was quite happy with our AD hire to replace him.

There's almost no question FSU w/ Weinke would have curb-stomped Tennessee that year.

Haha, Weinke was such a putz. I'll never forget him pissing himself when Torrance Marshall was barking at him before the Orange Bowl. He looked like he wanted to cry.

Sometimes when I need a good laugh, I go back and watch that video.

That notwithstanding, I thought that FSU team was way better than T martin and Co....except for when that rooster dude was playing. He was aawful.

Maybe, but I'm pretty sure FSU leaves OU gasping for air if we don't have Jeffrey Bowden as OC for that game. Someone should have known it was the beginning of something bad for FSU football at that time.
