Mark Sanchez dislocated his kneecap yesterday warming up for practice (what is up with Los Angeles QBs and non-contact injuries?). He's listed as day-to-day but the USC beat writer with the LA Daily News thinks he'll miss the opener against Ohio State.

What about their first opener against Virginia?

Sarcasm aside, I have to credit USC for continually playing actual football teams in their non-conference schedule, which is more than can be said for the vast majority of other big-time programs.

Like I pay attention to USC football enough to know who their opener is against. I just lifted it from the Daily News blog, which of course has since corrected it.

Damn it. I really want tOSU to lose that game. They do not need to be in another championship game.

They still could since the opener Sanchez is likely to miss is the Virginia game. Also, I'm not convinced Sanchez is a better QB than Mitch Mustain. Neither will be great this year, I don't think.

If Ohio State beats USC I'm going to be PO'd. It's bitter and it's ludicrous but I hate the Buckeyes more than I could ever hate SC and it's getting worse every year lately.

USC won't lose if they start Corp or Mustain.

It'd be awesome if both teams could somehow lose.

You ain't kidding. They play the best schedule I've looked at yet.

esl phenom kraig appleton, scout's 12th rated wr nationally, has committed to the illini, joining teammate terry hawthorne.

ZOOKED!

Zook is building a scary good receiving unit. Juice and Charest are not going to lack weapons over the next few years. Fayson, Cumberland, Benn, Scott, and Jenkins are going to be near unstoppable next year.

I'm still worried about finding some quality linebackers though, but I've got to trust Zook.

Im very anxious to see Martez Wilson get his shot this year, he is a freak of an athlete.

Yeah Tez is going to be a beast. Its going to be like having Simeon Rice again, he can do it all. He is quick enough to cover the tight end, strong enough to rush the passer, and tough enough to be good against the run. Last year he made some really impressive plays in the open field and on special teams. Since he came into the program he's put on a good bit of muscle, and he looks like an absolute beast warrior. I'm pretty excited about him this season.

It's even more impressive after I took a second look. They play a Pac-10 schedule (which isn't great but is far from a cakewalk), then they play @Virginia, Ohio State and Notre Dame out of conference. Not one cupcake to be found (obvious joke about ND being a cupcake inserted here).

According to THIS random website, USC's SoS is only #6

I'm not sure how they calculate Georgia's SoS, but it looks as if the non-D1 opponent isn't even factored in, which should lower theirs.

The Pac-10 teams are playing some ridiculous schedules this year, though.

It's funny how a team can play Blindnun U and not be punished for it. No way is there schedule harder than USC's. The SEC has this down to a science.

they play at arizona state and then their regular rivalry of georgia tech. that is not a cupcake out of conference schedule. and the SEC is deeper in terms of top 20 teams than the pac 10.

I didn't say it was a cakewalk but I did say that the SEC knows their way around the SOS loopholes.

The Top 20 is a vote of reputation and means little on what team is better than another. There are also 12 teams in the SEC and 10 in the PAC 10 so yeah, their percentage of chance of one being in the Top 20/25 is better than the PAC 10. It's funny how people never seem to notice this in football but point it out quite quickly when it comes to basketball.

I usually give SEC teams crap for their bevy of directional Louisiana schools, Sun Belt also-rans, and 1AA cupcakes but I have to give Georgia props. That schedule is definitely no joke.

But keep in mind that this is UGA's first OOC game west of the Mississippi since 1960.

I think there's a perception that beating a midtier OOC BCS school is the same as waxing the Citadel or La. Tech and that schedules should be ranked only by the "hard" (e.g. top 25 opponents) teams on the schedule. For years, the SEC would load up on absolute cupcakes in the first month of the season so by the time conference play came around you'd have lots of 4-0/4-0 type matchups and wins became more valuable and losses less damaging in the eyes of the pollsters. It's a beautiful self fulfilling prophecy.

But Texas Tech has to take the cake for biggest joke schedule of the year: Eastern Washington, @ Nevada, Southern Methodist, and UMass.

that's because the big east has 74 teams in basketball.

Penn State tried to beat that, as their original OOC was Coastal Carolina, Syracuse, Temple and someone like LA Tech. They swapped that last game for Oregon St., but it's still a total joke. A year or two ago their OOC had 3 of the bottom 5 teams in 1-A from the previous year

They're on ND's schedule too and I'm also blaming them.
