Should the Cubs look at Mench?

I know that the Hendry is not done filling out the roster for 2008, but early returns seem to show that the Cubs might need a right-handed power bat (Blanco, Ward, Cedeno(?), Fuld/Pagan, ????) unless Derosa is on the bench. I would imagine some team would give Mench a shot at starting, but if he's still available, would he be worth a shot?

I would definitely take a look at the guy. A guy who can mash lefties off the bench could really help the Cubs, especially if Murton is eventually traded.

I'd have interest in Mench if the Cubs could ever figure out a way to live with an 11-man pitching staff.

 

With a 5-man bench, he's tough to fit in.

If we could get him for under $1 mil, I'd consider it. But he isn't gonna be that cheap, and he's not good enough otherwise.

If Murton is traded in a deal for Roberts, I'd definitely get Mench to be the right-handed pinch hitter off of the bench. That would require that Fukudome move to CF though when Pie gets days off, and I'm not sure if the Cubs are willing to do that. He's not a bad righty platoon corner outfielder, but as long as Murton is on the roster he's not really a great candidate for the Cubs.

That would require that Fukudome move to CF though when Pie gets days off, and I'm not sure if the Cubs are willing to do that. If they are, then I'd have the bench as DeRosa, Ward, Mench, Ward, and Blanco.

 

Pagan is still around, and while he's not as good as Mench offensively, his presence means Fukudome doesn't HAVE to move to CF if Pie isn't playing.

I'm thinking Murton and Cedeno will probably be traded. My thoughts on the bench would be Fuld/Pagan as sub OF, Blanco (sub C), DeRosa as all-around sub and pinch hitter, Ward as power lefty pinch hitter, Mench as power righty pinch hitter, and Cedeno (or another middle IF) as sub middle IF.

Cedeno as the second infielder off of the bench and primary backup SS. Thanks for the correction. That's assuming he doesn't get traded for Roberts, but he hasn't been in the latest rumors.

 

For TT: the 5 man bench excludes Pagan for now if they get Mench. If they have to have a backup for CF, then the bench is done already (Cedeno, Ward, Murton, Pagan/Fuld, Blanco). If they don't (if Fukudome is that backup) that opens up another spot for Mench.
