That game was so awesome.

Floyd was nothing special, but that's easily one of my favorite Cubs moments in my lifetime.

It's official. Bye bye Cliffy:

Rays signed outfielder Cliff Floyd, who had been with the Cubs, to a one-year contract with a club option for 2009.

Floyd will be guaranteed $2.75 million next season and can earn an addtional $2 million in incentives. He'll be a right fielder and DH against right-handers in his first full season in the American League. He previously played in 47 games for the Red Sox in 2002.

Maybe I was in the process of moving or something at the time, but I don't remember that at all. Clearly it's a home run, but what's so special about it?

Matt Murton deserved a hell of a lot better than being a backup to somebody who couldn't land a better gig than playing for the freaking Devil Rays for a $2.75M base. Lou should be a little embarrassed that the market assigned such a low value to one of his cherished pets.

To be fair, Floyd was only willing to go to one of the Florida teams this year, just as he was only willing to go to the Cubs last year and passed up several other offers to do so. With the way he limited his market, his agent did good to get that much.

Also, Floyd was not an everyday player even when he was healthy last year.

I really doubt he would have gotten much more elsewhere. If any team had come forward with a significantly bigger offer he would have taken it or used it as leverage to get more money from the Florida teams.

I would probably agree with that for the same reasons why his at-bats were limited with the Cubs. He can't stay healthy for more than a couple weeks at a time, he is a 7 inning player, (and is unusable in some of the larger OF's in the league), and he only plays against right handers. The Rays deal is very similar to the Cubs deal for those very reasons.

i don't think it's much of an embarrassment to the Cubs though to have a older player sign almost exactly the same deal as he did the year before though.

Floyd put up a .281/.370/.422 line v. RHP last year, it's not like he wasn't useful.

the kapser/brenly sound effects make it 1000x funner than just the visual.

I must have missed something last year because I really didn't notice Floyd as on of Piniella's "cherished pets". He pretty much played him exclusively against RHP. Murton was platooning at the end of the season against LHP, not serving as the backup. If anything Piniella's use of Floyd last year probably helped set the market for him as a part time / platoon player only.
