It's very, very easy to idenitfy the differences between the people from the different regions/countries of Asia. I blame movies more than anything for making people think they're hard to tell apart, since they'll often, say, cast someone who is Thai as Chinese, or someone who is Japanese as Korean, etc., etc..

agreed on both counts. i think it also has something to do with the fact that the whole "all asian people look the same!" thing is thrown around so freely (often jokingly). i suspect there are a lot of people who never make any attempt and just assume it's impossible or something.
