I don't see how this guy sticks.

He may not have to.

If the Cubs like what they see in ST, they could try and work out a deal with the Twins.

It it comes down to that, hopefully we do a better job than the last time we were faced with this type of situation. IIRC, we ended up coughing up Eric Hinske to Billy Beane for a guy that ended up doing nothing for us.

Didn't they trade Hinske for Cairo?

I thought Bellhorn was involved in that somehow, or was that a different Rule 5 pick?

Bellhorn was a different trade, coming here for Adam Morrissey, who never hit the majors.

Hinske was traded for Miguel Cairo and the right to send Scott Chiasson to the minors. I don't know the specifics of how those trades are worded, I guess it would technically be, Chiasson is returned to Oakland as a previous Rule 5 pick, Hinske is then traded for Miguel Cairo, and Chiasson.

No. I'm blanking on the guys name. He was a relief pitcher that we ruled 5'd away from Oakland and we swung a deal with Beane to keep him. The reliever never made an impact with the Cubs (no surprise) and MacPhail / Hendry gave up Hinske to get him.

Ahhh yes. Scott Chiasson ........ My bad on Cairo. I hadn't realized he was in on that deal.

Hinske for Chiasson. Chiasson pitched extremely well the season after the trade, had very very good stuff, and looked to become a very good relief pitcher. But as happens with pitchers, he ended up hurting his arm and never recovered.

Like lots of deals or draft selections, that would have probably looked like a very smart deal had Chiasson stayed healthy. But when you get pitchers, it goes with the territory that a lot of them are going to get cooked by arm problems.

That was not a dumb trade by the Cubs, unless you consider any pursuit of pitching to be dumb.

If it was just a rule 5 pickup it would have looked smart. But it involved trading away a very useful chip. A starting position player for a reliever is just not smart. You can't just couch it as the pursuit of pitching and therefore justify the pursuit no matter the price paid. Relievers are unreliable enough, minor league relievers are a whole different animal. Hinske was nothing special, but he put up some decent numbers during at his best.
