Sullivan is reporting that its the Reds who are asking for Marshall. Pull the trigger!

WTH? This should be done already if that's the case.

I'm not sure we'd want Hamilton replacing Pie "against tough lefties". He was a complete black hole against LHP last year. .583 OPS, struck out in over 1/3 of his PA's, and he still had a .350 BABIP against them. Granted, it was only 80 PA's, but still.

if it's marshall for hamilton straight up...sure, why the hell not.

especially considering, for whatever reason, Lou seemed hell bent on keeping him out of the rotation.

Can somebody give me the quick recap of why Hamilton sometimes gets a bad rep? I know about the steroids thing, but does he have major injury problems in his past ? Or was there just some minor injuries last year and i'm just mistaken. He would definately be a welcome addition though, even if he's injury plagued.

Wut?

Hamilton has never been accused of roids.

He had a problem with coke.

I thought it was Heroin and coke

Trade Marshall for Hamilton

Platoon Hamilton/Murton in RF. Hamilton was .319/.391/.637/1.028, 18 HR 43 RBI in 256 PA's vs. righties last year. Murton was .319/.386/.505/.892, 3 HR 9 RBI in 101 PA's vs. lefties.

Why did we do such a lovely favor for a division rival again? I'm iffy on Hamilton, but I think moreso I have this aversion to guys involved in deals where we get burned for some reason. Like Dontrelle Willis and Jon Garland, I've never liked the trade rumors about getting them back. Once we make a colossal mistake I don't think it's a bad idea to just move on and put it behind you. And there's something that seems colossally stupid to me to giving away a guy to a divisional rival and then a year later falling all over yourself to get him.

Trading Sean Marshall for him is hardly "falling all over (our)selves" to get him.

Are you talking about giving away Hamilton? That's a misrepresentation of what actually happened with him.

I know people try and spin such and such a way, but I'm not interested in splitting hairs on the issue. I know nobody does the Cubs any favors, but apparently we have no problem doing favors of division rivals. We enabled the Reds to obtain him. If someone says "They could've cut a deal with another team" I'd say fine, let them do that, can you imagine Boston doing something like this for New York? Of course not.

They sold the pick without any knowledge of who it would be. That disconnect makes a huge difference.

Let's put all the facts out there.

1999 (18 years old) - #1 overall draft pick by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Played 56 very good games in rookie ball, moved up and played 16 horrible games in low class A.

2000 (19 years old) - Played 96 games at A ball with a low 800's OPS. Did get the MVP of the Future's Game that year, though. Injured in a car crash after the season.

2001 (20 years old) - Played in only 27 games, 23 of which came at AA where he posted a .457 OPS

2002 (21 years old) - Went back to high class A, where he played 56 games with an .866 OPS, before injuries forced him out. Suspended on July 15 for his second failed drug test.

2003 (22 years old) - During spring training, was sent to the minor league camp. Instead of reporting, he disappeared for six weeks. After his return, management sent him home. He did not return, citing "undisclosed off-field problems".

2004 (23 years old) - Suspended by MLB in February for another violation of the substance abuse rules.

2005 (24 years old) - Was not reinstated by MLB, as he had failed additional drug tests. Gets clean in early October. States that he had been in rehab eight times, and attempted suicide three times since 2003.

2006 (25 years old) - Reinstated June 30th. Begins play on July 4th, in low class A, where he posts a sub 700 OPS. His season ends 15 games later with a knee injury.

While undeniably talented, he was going to be a 26 year old with huge makeup issues and absolutely no track record of success, seeing as how he had 15 games under his belt in the last 4 years. You can fault this Cubs regime for a lot, but this looked like a very low-risk proposition to make a decent amount of money at the Reds' expense.

I heard they made the pick and then traded the player to the Reds. Talent acknowledged, I'm not sold yet, I'd have the same feeling if you replaced Hamilton with Rick Ankiel.

Actually, a better analogy would be Boston doing a favor for either Tampa Bay, Baltimore or Toronto. Don't know if you really think this, but Cincinnati isn't the Cubs main division rival. With Milwaukee playing well, I would even consider Cincinnati our second division rival.

They are probably our third. Those toothless hillbillies about 300 miles south on I-55 are our main divisional rival.

In this division anyone's a competitor. Anyway it seems like a lot of fringey guys can have one good season for the Reds recently, like Rich Aurilia and David Ross last year, Scott Hatteberg and Jeff Keppinger this year, Jason LaRue, Joe Randa, and Javier Valentin in 2005... you can't tell that much from half a season with Cincinnati.

Marshall for Hamilton straight up? Why not?

Perhaps ask the Reds to include Freel. Marshall, Fontenot, & Pagan for Hamilton & Freel. Add a lower level prospect, if necessary.

Platoon Hamilton/Murton in RF and Pie/Freel in CF. Two regular lefties in the lineup and they add some speed/versatility with Freel. The deal only adds about $2.5 mil. to payroll.

Work out a deal for Tejada offering some combination of Cedeno/Patterson/Ohman/Eyre/Veal/Hart. Call it an off season.
