Here's your completely random blog rumor for the night:
I can’t tell you who, and I can’t tell you what, and I’m not really sure on why and how, but a source who asked to remain unnamed has suggested that the Brian Roberts hostage crisis has been delayed due to the inclusion of one Felix Pie and one Erik Bedard in the trade conversations (I hope you guys know me well enough to understand that the source is NOT some stupid **** from some other website). Rumor has it that Jim Hendry is looking to make this big move right before the Cubs Convention so he can answer questions that aren’t, “Is that jelly on your shirt or blood?” Should Hendry manage to land both Bedard and Roberts from the Orioles, you have to assume the cost to the Cubs would be huge.

This is not from my source, but I’m speculating here: Is it possible that Mark DeRosa might go back the other way? I like DeRosa, but it’s clear he wants to be an everyday player, and the Orioles will need someone other than Freddie Bynum to play second.

I hope Baltimore burns to the ground...

I honestly think with the way that Desipio and HJE are linked, plus Desipios hatred for NSBB, this is all a clever ploy to cause this board to explode for no reason.

If Hendry can pull off a Bedard/Roberts trade for Pie and some other prospects (Marshall, Murton, Veal, Cedeno, etc.) I will be amazed.

we can trade pie for all i care. sign kenny and be fine.

but since were really interested in acquiring pitching too, why not work out a three team deal with the angels for joe saunders

And, after 114 pages, we're right back where we started. Awesome.

Does that mean its gonna take 228 pages to get this deal finalized???

Can you imagine if that actually happened?

Tim or someone would have to start a new website.

Hey Golden Thunder, are you able to get Duke stuff fairly easy where you live? I have a son and daughter that are completely nuts over Duke and its hard to get things around here. My son has 9 shirts and counting.

Of course not.

It means that 228 pages from now, we'll be back to where we started on the 114th page, which is where we started on the first page.

Not that good of a minor league pitcher, not that good of a major league pitcher. Pretty horrible WHIP and BAA as well.

I knew it had to be something that simple. #-o

If the Cubs do end up trading for Roberts, someone should print out this entire thread and mail it to him.

Yes. This.

Dear Mr. Roberts,

I hope you didn't take it personally when I said on page 43 that you were only a marginal upgrade over Mark DeRosa. I was only thinking in terms of what it took to trade for you. We had to give up some good prospects to get you. I hope you have no hard feelings, and that you realize that I will come to love you just like I do all other Cubs' players before you (save for Latroy Hawkins, Antonio Alfonseca, Todd Hundley, and a few others).

Your new best friend,

EJ

P.S.- If you get a chance, I would love some free tickets to any game that you can spare. You can PM me at northsidebaseball.com and I will give you my information. Thanks.

FWIW, Muskat says the teams are still talking as well.

Are the Cubs still pursuing Brian Roberts or were they scared off by the steroids? He is exactly what they need to make a strong challenge (apart from a center fielder who can hit). Roberts can lead off, steal, hit for average and field. They should have enough pitchers to make the deal happen.

-- Dan W., Naples, Fla.

The Cubs and Orioles are still talking, but some of the players mentioned recently are not involved, so don't believe the rumors. Keep in mind that Roberts is a favorite of Orioles owner Peter Angelos, who blocked a trade last year that involved the second baseman. The Mitchell Report revelations are not the holdup -- it's just a matter of finding the right match for both teams, and the reports out of Baltimore are that Orioles general manager Andy MacPhail has very specific requests.

The Cubs don't need a second baseman because they have Mark DeRosa. But one thing Cubs manager Lou Piniella learned in his first season in Chicago is that players like Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee need more days off, and DeRosa's versatility makes him a valuable fill-in at those spots as well as the outfield. What Piniella wants is more speed and another left-handed bat, and the switch-hitting Roberts could provide that.

Yeah I posted that earlier in the day Vance. It proves that once again, Bruce Levine has no earthly idea what he's talking about. 0% chance of a deal being made? Yeah right.

Place your bets on this thread reaching 200 pages.
That's almost a given. More challenging would be a pool to predict the date the thread reaches 200 pages.

Muskat proves nothing. She's a clueless ape.

Any estimate on the number of working hours lost reading/posting in this thread? We may have found the reason for the recent slump in the economy.
