Reactionary.

Unnessecary.

Tell me again how a helmet will prevent injuries when a coach is hit in the neck?

Tell me how this hurts anything?

The only thing I could think of is if we still had Wavin' Wendell, the helmet would make him sort of look like Marvin the Martian. That's all I got.

Great idea, as far as I'm concerned.

Gah! I'm leaving town for the weekend immediately after work, or the first thing I'd be doing when I got home is some Marvin/Wendell photoshopping...

Pitchers are probably more at risk then the coaches. Should they wear helmets too? It's probably only a matter of time, unfortunately, before a major league pitcher is struck and killed by a line drive.

Maybe you're right. But since there was a base coach that died, it's only natural that it's the first reaction.

It doesn't hurt anything. It also wouldnt hurt anything to put them on umpires, the pitcher etc. It wouldnt hurt anything the encase the stands with nets (similar to Japan I believe). It wouldnt hurt anything to have a face mask on the batter either.

Just because it "doesn't hurt anything" is a terrible reason. Obviously if they wnt to wear it, more power to them.

The most ironic thing here is that had Coolbaugh been wearing a helmet, he would still be dead.

I know the softball pitchers wear a chestguard to protect themselves.

This is a reaction to a horrific accident! While there is no reason not to, there is no reason not to make chest protectors mandatory. Pitchers too!! They are closer than coaches.

Also, aren't the third baseman and the first baseman the same distance away? Are they next?

What about personal choice?!?!?!?! When Hockey went to mandatory helmets, they grandfathered every player in the league to give them a CHOICE!!!!

While pitchers are obviously at danger, it could be argued that the players are more prepared physically and mentally to be getting out of the way or using something thet coaches don't have, the glove, to try and snag it or block it. Of course, the argument that pitchers are in better shape goes out the window with certain physical specimens, but by and large pitchers are better suited to move out of the way due to their age.

And the key thing here is this ultimately changes nothing to the game itself in terms of play. Trying something similar with pitchers would entail much more change than coaches wearing helmets, so arguing the whole "slippery slope" angle doesn't necessarily work since doing similar things for players is a pretty huge jump.

Besides, safety for umps and catchers has evolved over the years...isn't this along those lines? Hell, umps used to have no protection at all.

I wonder if HS's are going to do the same thing? I done a few dives avoiding the ball and I've been pretty lucky so far and I don't even remember a coach getting hit in a game ever during a game other than on a one hopper.

I think this is an overreaction. I don't guess it hurts anything, but I dunno. Next thing we know they are going to have face guards on the batters' helmets like little leaguers.

i'm surprised about how passionate some of you are about this. thi seems like a total non-issue

I think alot of it has to do with how conservative the game of baseball is to change. Obviously baseball's belligerence to change can be a bad thing (segregation), but one of the game's most enduring qualities is how conservative it is and how it is basically an antiquated game being played in modern times.

But I think you're right, it probably is a non-issue.

Couldn't some of it be from fear of a future lawsuit?

I know Coolbaugh didn't exactly get hit in the head, but if a coach dies from a linedrive, and mlb doesn't respond to it, what happens the next time someone gets beaned in the grill?
