Did Marshall sleep with Hendry's wife AND daughter or something? He's essentially been benched for Steve (6.00 ERA) Trachsel and Ryan (Haven't started in 3 years) Dempster. What the hell did Marshall do wrong? Is getting people out the wrong thing to do in baseball now?

Two months late to the party, but Sean Marshall stopped being good at keeping balls in the yard and recording outs, so it seemed like a good idea to replace him with a veteran pitcher from the AL down the stretch. It seemed like a good idea and it wasn't.

I don't know how one could suggest that anything involving putting Steve Traschel in your rotation would ever be a good idea.

No, no it didn't.

Marshall's big thing has been durability. Can he stay healthy, and can he stay effective beyond the 100-110 inning mark? They showed signs of him having a tired arm last year (the biggest sign that they simply weren't losing faith in him was them pulling him earlier and earlier in games that he was effective in). If he can't put 150 innings on his arm, he isn't much use as a starter that you pencil in to the rotation.

Everyone really got on the Marshall train because of some desperation for a homegrown guy, but I just keep thinking of those blowouts against Philly and Houston and don't really yearn for his "well, we might not end up losing" five-inning starts.

What, he had 5 starts out of 19 where he gave up more than 3 earned runs. Before those back to back bad starts against Philly and Houston, he had a 3.10 ERA in 69.2 IP. No way Tracshel seemed like a better idea.

Jason Marquis had a 5.58 ERA after the month of May but God forbid Sean Marshall has 3 ugly starts and a bad August.

This is simply brilliant stuff. One of Alice's adventures down the rabbit hole should be talking to Cubs decision-makers.

He showed signs of not being good....ie dump him before the rest of the league realizes this. Though he was a better alternative than trachsel.

Being better than Tracshel... that's a REAL high bar.

Exactly, how can you say that the Cubs pulled him as a pre-emptive move. The kid has been in the bigs for over 300 innings now, teams should have figured out how to hit him much earlier then last August. How the kid will ever get a chance to prove himself when, at the first sign of danger he is yanked from the rotation is beyond me.

I cannot defend pulling Sean from the rotation and inserting Trachsel. I truly can't fathom what happened there....However, I'm hoping that Dempster moving to the rotation signifies that Marshall is going to be included in a somewhat significant trade. I know we live in bizzarro world, but I can hope, right?

Why announce the move now, though? It would be just as easy to wait until February to talk about Dempster's move to the rotation.

I agree with you. I can't think of any good reason to publicly announce that Dempster is headed back to the rotation right now.

IIRC Marshall has had durability problems, as CCP noted, and he's never really racked up that many innings. He's been very effective when healthy, but the Cubs are afraid to over-work him.

Before 2006, the last time he threw over 100 innings was the year he was drafted - 2003.

I've decided that I'm going to give Hendry credit for a PURPOSEFUL leak of information. Here is what I'm assuming. Hendry is hoping that some team out there (of the Orioles, Giants and Reds) were already thinking about Dempster and then will start salivating when it comes out that the CUBS are willing to trot him out into the rotation. If the Cubs would disrupt what was a very solid rotation last year, then Dempster might still have starter stuff, right? Right!?!

Didn't say it was realistic, I said I would give Hendry potential credit for some foresight. 'Nuff said.\

I say ANY effort to increase Dempster's perceived value could only be good. Who's with me!?

Sure, why not? People definitely take things at face value WAY too much around here. Shopping Dempster is an outstanding idea, and if you can sell him as a "proven closer" AND an option for the rotation, it can only help his value. As a bonus, you get to irritate a whole lot of jumpy Cubs fans. It's a win/win.

he was struggling down the stretch and they gambled on a vet that had a couple good starts.

the dempster thing is completely the work of hendry. he is trying to justify the contract (and length) he gave to dempster. much like forcing izturis, miller, barrett and jones into the lineup at the start of the season last year.those were his big moves and they needed to be justfied or proven.

My hope is that lou will again make the moves he wants as soon as performance is proven.

If the occasional mound "chats" that Lou had w/ Dempster this past season are any indication, the reality of Dempster starting could prove to bear some very colorful visits to the mound through the first and maybe second month next spring. If it's not working I can't imagine Lou will stick with it any longer after May, possibly earlier.

Whats that? The CUBS are going to move Dempster into the rotation? The very same brainstrust that gave Neifi Perez and Henry Blanco multi-year deals? Holy Jeez, I want to trade my first born for him!!!

Maybe that will work on Colletti and Sabean.

Believe it or not, I actually thought this post through.

How is it that the talk is all about Marshall and we still have Marquis on the roster? If anyone is replace with Dempster, shouldn't it be Marquis? For cryin out loud, he wasn't even on the playoff roster!

Yes he was. Unless by "he" you mean Marshall. Marquis was on the playoff roster and Marshall wasn't. Not that I see why it makes a difference either way in regards to decisions for the '08 team.

I don't understand it either. Actually, is there any doubt Dempster is going to suck as starter? No doubt here. He's junk in anything but a closer role, and shaky there as it is.

Besides, why the hell are we making declarations about our starting rotation in freaking November? WTH is that all about?
