The Angels have 6 guys (either under contract or entering final year of arbitration eligibility in 2008) that they potentially can wave goodbye to after the 2008 season and free up $48M in payroll for 2009. I'm beginning to understand why so many people think the Angels are the favorities to get ARod.

Vlad Guerrero ($14.5M in 2008, $15.0M or $3.0M buyout in 2009)

Garret Anderson ($12.0M in 2008, $14.0M or $3.0M buyout in 2009)

Orlando Cabrera ($9.0M in 2008, Free agent)

John Lackey ($7.0M in 2008, $9.0M or $0.5M buyout in 2009)

Francisco Rodriguez (arbitration eligible in 2008 - predict he can get $9.5M after $7M in 2007)

Juan Rivera (arbiitration eligible in 2008 - predict he can get $2.5M after $2M in 2007)

Even if they pick up the options on Guerrero and Lackey, they've still freed up $27.5M in 2009.

I'll research a few more teams, but the Angels look like they've got the money to do it.

Their desire to land a premier 3b hasn't exactly been a big secret either. Word was on the street that they would do everything in their power to land Aramis if he went the free agent route last year. If they can get ARod instead, they have to be pretty happy that Aramis elected to stay in Chicago.

Also, the Angels haven't made it any kind of secret that they are battling against the Dodgers besides the AL East. They are battling the Dodgers for fans. Hence the name change.

Arte Moreno also loves him some latin american ballplayers.

The Angels have been #1 on my list to land ARod since the day ARod opted out.

Rumors are that the Angels feel 1-upped by the Dodgers getting Torre. I think the Angels will do whatever it takes to get ARod to get the upperhand in LA again. Especially gonna need to once the Dodgers get Andruw Jones.....yeah, I said it!

I think that will happen too - like you said. Where do you think Torii Hunter ends up? Rangers?

I think Hendry will strike quickly as he has every year, if he's going to go after free agents at all so maybe he'll bump the Angels price up a bit and get them out of contention for anything else the Cubs need.

But what about Slappy?

Rangers are possible. I think Atlanta will make a strong run for him too.

Slappy to LF, where he is best suited to play, unless you consider "pinch runner" a position. Either that or 4-3 gets traded.

The Red Sox have over $50 million in free agents this year (Schilling, Lowell, Taverez, etc.) and over $20 million next year. In addition they have a few players like Crisp who could be traded and save $4-5 million. Because of their financial flexibility and deep pockets, the Angels and Red Sox seem to be overwhelming favorites in the ARod sweepstakes.

Per Bruce Levine today, the White Sox are making him their #1 priority this off-season.

Red Sox picked up the option on Taverez already.

I think I read somewhere that Hunter would like to play for the Nats. Not that I'm so sure the Nats would fork out the cash for him, but he seems genuinely interested in playing there.

Him and Young have been very good friends for a long time, thats his reasoning.
