Tigers acquired shortstop Edgar Renteria from the Braves for RHP Jair Jurrjens and outfielder Gorkys Hernandez.

That was remarkably quick. That Renteria is being dealt is no surprise, and it figured that the Tigers would be high on the list of suitors. However, we don't see wht the Braves felt they had to make the move today when better offers could have come later. This simply isn't a great return for a player who was one of the best in the NL last season. Renteria hit .332/.390/.470 in 2007, and he's under control for a very reasonable $20 million over two years (the second year is at Detroit's option). The Tigers did quite well to get him now. It'll certainly head off any Alex Rodriguez speculation.

I would think that the trade would effectively put them out of the A-Rod sweapstakes, if they were ever in it to begin with.

Watch out of Detriot next year.

Yeah, so Sean Marshall and anyone else could have easily got this done.

I'd rather keep Marshall and use him as trade bait for a RFer...and get ARod. :D

Another thing....Boras and the Braves have been talking about Jones, I wonder if the Braves let him know about their interest in ARod and this might be a reason he left his Yankee money?

Maybe ARod has a spot open in Atlanta? They are losing the Jones contract and may be a serious player for him.

he has less of a chance to win there than some other options

Unless they are going to move Johnson to center, escobar to 2b and play ARod at short OR move Chipper back to the OF again, it ain't happening. Both of those scenarios seem very unlikely to happen.

But they are a very competitive team and with a couple of deals they could be a top 2 team in the NL. Add to that it's close to ARods home in Florida.

They have options and young talent. They also are pretty creative when it comes to deals so this quick deal makes me wonder why they made this trade so early, unless they are going young I can't think of a reason why they would sell Renteria so quickly. Renteria could be on Mitchells list I suppose and this was a chance to sell high.

I don't think they really sold short a ton here. I think Marshall + another player fits their needs better, but Jurrjens and Hernandez aren't bad. Gorky is pretty highly thought of and Jurrjens is only 21 despite already reaching the majors. Hes in a really rich group of young pitchers and probably gets overshadowed because of this.

I agree. With the good young pitching, Edgar makes the offense better and if they avoid injuries (which they didn't do this year and are not guaranteed to miss next year because some guys are old) they will be tought.

Of course, the problem is their division. It'll probably take 95 wins to get it.

You have to remember that Atlanta traded for Tex at the deadline last year, which increased payroll rather than reduced it like they've been wanting to do for years. They have Yunel Escobar and Brent Lillibridge to step in at SS.

I don't see Atlanta making a play for A-Rod. They just don't want to hang on to players too long that they clearly want to move. Each player that they don't trade right away hampers their future offseason decisions.

Considering Jurrjens >>>> Sean Marshall...probably not.

I think Gorky is probably the more valuable of the two, but I think a Marshall + EPatt deal fits their immediate needs better. Basically a lower risk/lower reward version of Gorky and Jurrjens.

Maybe not EASILY gotten the deal done, but I think we could have gotten it done.

I like Jurrjens a lot, but Marshall is more advanced and had better numbers through the minors. Gorkys Hernandez, on the other hand, put up pretty good numbers (aside from power) in the MWL for a 19 year old.

It would have taken more than Marshall and a throw in to get Renteria.

I think I read somewhere they are going to try Lillibridge in CF.

Marshall and Colvin? I can see why they wanted Jurrjens though, even moreso than Marshall.

Marshall and Colvin would have gotten the job done, but something tells me the Cubs value Colvin more than they should. I don't see them trading him unless it's for a big name. Renteria doesn't fit that bill, imo.
