I wonder if the Cubs could or would shop Aramis if they get ARod. They could probably get a good haul in return.

Oh, the possiblities.

I haven't been this excited since Nomar.

Getting Arod only increases the sales value of the team.

Seriously, they'd make half his salary back on jerseys alone.

I know I'd buy one.

NTC. And what would be the point of bringing in a top name free agent only to trade one away?

Stick A-Rod back at SS like he probably prefers and call it good.

If A-Rod can't play SS anymore, I'd play him at 2B and keep ARam. Should ARod actually sign with the Cubs, they should ink Pie in CF and leave him there.

BTW, Boras can't score high marks with Selig with reporting this during the WS. I don't know that there's anything Selig can do about it though.

The value of the team goes up that much more having the best player on the planet inked to a long term deal.

As well as Wrigley sells out game after game, they could easily raise prices and get back every drop of the money being extended to A-Rod.

With that said, I think the Cubs would likely be A-Rod's #1 choice because of Lou, but he'll probably be offered more money by teams like Anaheim and Boston.

Boston is a real likelihood, IMO. They'd be like a video game team.

I don't think the BoSox will be players in the A-rod sweepstakes. They have Lowell who plays well in Fenway, performs well during the regular and postseason and complements the team well, and not to mention he is a much cheaper alternative than A-rod.

Besides I wonder how Boston feels about A-rod making his big announcement on the day they're gonna clinch the WS

I think Lowell will stay with Boston as well. I believe he's also a FA at the end of the year.

I hope the Cubs break the bank for him.

Just out of curiosity, how come...is it so they can't go after any other FA's?

Let's see. Mike Lowell or A-Rod. Hmmm. Tough decision.

Not.

Apparently, Theo sees Lowell as a "core" player and intends to resign him to a 3-4 year deal. That's per FOX on the game tonight. Obviously, ARod being available may change their thought process, but that has been their stance on Lowell thus far.

Count me as surprised. Arod must have really wanted out, because he must have known he couldn't get that much more money out of another team. It's encouraging that it wasn't all about the money. I thought the Cubs had no chance, and now I have to think they are in the running and may even be frontrunners depending on the status of the sale.

$9M (very good player) vs. maybe $30M (great player)

Is the difference between very good and great worth approx. $20M?

It's far from an obvious decision. Plus A-Rod would command perhaps 5+ years, and the Sox supposedly don't go for that kind of thing...

He's a player in decline and I don't think he'll stick at SS (maybe fore 1 year). Going forward which do you think is more likely - 06 or 07 ARod?

Lowell will get more than 9m a year.

Boras said he attempted to notify Yankees general manager Brian Cashman of the decision Sunday but couldn't reach him, so he left a voice mail.

"Hi You've reached the voice mailbox of Brian Cashman I'm not able to come to the phone right now, please leave a message."

"Oh hey Bri-man it's Scotty, hey to bad I couldn't get a hold of you but Arod has decided to opt out of his extremely generous contract and no longer be a member of your Yankees, have a good man."

That's just Theo playing the game the way it's supposed to be played.

And just because A-Rod is available doesn't guarantee Boston will land him. Lowell makes for a very nice back up plan.

06 ARod instead of Theriot at SS this year would've made the Cubs prohibitive favorites to win the pennant, if not the Series.

Lowel is a product of the lineup. He's 33 and his numbers scream regression to the mean. Boston could do a lot worse, but they have the resources to take on A-Rod and let Lowell sign a fat contract elsewhere.

He's more likely to be the 06 player but I'd say he'll actually somewhere in between the two.

I'd like to know, too.

Because a Cubs lineup of

C - Soto

1B - Lee

2B - DeRo

3B - ARam

SS - ARod

LF - Soriano

CF - Jones/Pie

RF - Murton

...would pretty much leave the Cards with no chance of competing for the next couple years, particularly if Prior can come back and pitch to even 75% of his former self next year.

That outfield sure looks crappy, but my god, that infield has better hitters than any outfield around...

I know he would like the Cubs to be screwed with contracts and such. I guess that's the only reason I could see for CFICT feeling that way.
