Walt pretty much knew when he caught lightning in a bottle and didn't re-sign his trash.

This is the first thing I thought when this happened. A very Hendryesque signing.

6.5 million a year for a guy who was an above average starter last year. Not a bad deal for the Cards.

And a pretty bad starter for the two years before that.

Didn't Walt Jocketty re-sign Ryan Franklin? Come on, I'd rather have Joel Pineiro than Ryan Franklin.

I don't understand some of these contracts. "We've got to keep Pineiro away from the free agent market!" Come on.

Ryan Franklin is a reliever making $2.5M per for two years. Pineiro will be making $7.5M in 2009 as a starter. I'd rather have Franklin in either role, regardless of money, but it's an apples to oranges comparison as is.

The point was, someone said Jocketty knew when to cut bait with the improbable success guys, and I don't think he made the right choice with Franklin. Wasted money is wasted money - Glendon Rusch and Neifi Perez at $2.5 million were no bargains.

He should have traded him before the deadline, but he's not a bad guy to have around in the bullpen and the money's fairly negligible. Anyway, you said you'd rather have Pineiro, which probably wouldn't be smart -- especially considering the money. That was my point.

Just in case I get another Harry Potter rant, I'll just say that I'm going to use the same argument as last time plus his ZiPS projections.

Or turds to snot in this case.

Pineiro sucks, and Franklin will be alright.

You really have an axe to grind, way to hold on to long-dead, should-be-forgotten arguments with a death's grip.

I don't think Ryan Franklin will be alright, in any case. If the money is equal I'd rather have Pineiro.

Arguing a point isn't grinding an axe. Additionally the money isn't equal. The Franklin deal is much better. Franklin has the better numbers throughout his career.
