Phils Rowand wants $84 mil?

The Phils are not optimistic they'll re-sign All-Star center fielder Aaron Rowand, who is weeks away from free agency and seeking a humungous payday on the heels of a career year in 2007. Hoping to build a foundation for a new deal, Phillies management had a recent chat with Rowand's agent, Craig Landis, and was floored to discover Rowand is seeking a six-year, $84 million contract. -- Bucks County Courier Times

I think Rowand might get $40-45 million over 4 years. Craig Landis must be taking lessons from Scott Boras.

Fourteen million a year?

With the way this market is...he might just get it.

and by might just; i mean most likely will.

I don't think he has a chance to get $14 million, but I'm sure he won't get 6 years either.

I see him getting something more along the lines of what Mathews Jr. got.

There are going to be quite a few good CF's on the market this offseason, so I don't see him making as much money as he think he can.

Maybe a tad more.

I see the FA market going down a bit this season. Teams like the Red Sox and Yankees are concentrating more on building their teams via the minor leagues with less emphasis on FA signings. Look at some of the names that have been brought up by just these teams alone, Bucholtz, Papelbon, Lester, Hughes, Chamberlain, Hanley Ramirez (traded to the Marlins at maturity). There are more on the way.

I think the first 2-3 FA signings could really dictate what direction this market goes, should it be slightly higher or lower than last years.

What did Mathews and Pierre get last year? I dont think its a stretch for Rowand to get 14 mill

Also read somewhere that the Dodgers after they trade Kemp to Minnesota for Santana may sign Rowand and move Pierre to LF.

LOL @ any team that would give him that.

I don't know why it would be nuts the Cubs over paid for a LF last year

and america overpaid in the louisiana purchase. it's all related, really.

MLB's spending spree has flourished in recent years even without the Yanks and Sox leading the charge... or even really getting very involved at all.

Aside from Clemens, who is obviously a special case, the Yanks haven't had a bigtime signing in years.

The Sox? DiceK is again a special case. JD Drew fits. Anyone else?

Andy Pettitte for $16M after the 2006 season, Johnny Damon after the 2005 season for 4/$52M, and Carl Pavano after the 2004 season for 4/$40M. Sheffield was signed the year before that.

Yep, they've stayed on the sidelines for the really crazy signings for the last couple years.

Pettitte wasn't a bidding war, it was simply a manner of how much the Yankees decided to pay him. I don't think you can really call signings like Pettitte (or Bonds last year) part of the free agent market because they were heading to one and one team only. I agree with the Damon and Pavano signings though being pretty big.

Yay, Aaron Rowand. He's what the Cubs need alright:

- Another guy who can underproduce but we can talk about how hard-nosed, blue-collar, and gritty he is. We can also bring up him crashing into a fence ten times a day. Oh yeah, everyone is complaining about Jones's offense in 2007, let's compare Jacque's 2007 OPS to Rowand's 2005 and 2006. Grrrreat.

- He gives our lineup that low to medium-low walks righthanded hitter who strikes out more than 100 times a season that we're sorely missing.

- Getting him will boost us above the Baltimore Orioles as the kings of overpaying for marginally above average talent.

- Had career highs in just about every category in a contract year, well I'm convinced.

Rowand can make a perfectly reasonable case that he is worth every bit of $84M if Alfonso Soriano is worth $136M. Both are coming off great years after two bad years, both will be 31 yrs old in the first season of their new contracts, both have good but clearly below superstar career numbers for their positions. Rowand also put up a .905 OPS in 2004.
