I mean with everything that was said about him at his signing, to where he is now in fans' eyes, he might be the target of man crushes that are only rivaled by Woody, Prior during his rookie year, Ryno or Gracie?

Has this happened to any other Cub, more dramatically or quickly then Mark?

GREAT signing Hendry.

I think the premise of this entire thread is flawed. For many people, including myself, the signing of DeRosa wasn't bad. I don't think DeRosa was ever a goat.

There were certainly questions about the signing, and it definitely wasn't a sure thing he would replicate his 2006, but I would hardly consider his contract a goat contract. I thought he was overpaid by Hendry, but a nice addition.

I don't recall DeRosa ever being a goat. People didn't like the dollars he got, but we were much more concerned with the Blanco re-signing, the Marquis signing, the Lilly signing and the Soriano signing to be too worried about DeRosa.

That said, if the Cubs somehow do this, DeRosa will be one of the people remembered most fondly from this team. Hell, he will be anyway.

No new information of course, but it just occurred to me again that Marquis is making twice as much as DeRosa this year and for the following two. That just doesn't sit right with me.

DeRo has been huge this year with his patience, versatility, and all-around smart play. No, he's not going to net you 30/100, but up against the middle infielders/supersubs we've had here in recent years.... Derosa's just miles beyond.

Wouldn't a goat be somebody who caused the team to lose a big game or something?

I was critical of the DeRosa signing because 2006 was the first year he did much of anything over any prolonged duration. He absolutely sucked in the one year he got his most playing time. But I warmed to him pretty much as soon as he started playing. He's been a very nice addition as the starting second baseman. If he can maintain a 100 OPS+ at second base he'll have been more than worth the money.

I wouldn't say he's miles beyond Walker, but he's certainly been better than almost every other versatile player Hendry has gone after.

What is OPS + again?

I like De Rosa's personality too. Although winning surely makes for a good clubhouse, this team is certainly more likable than 2003. The comments Blanco made after not making the first round roster are an example.

OPS normalized for park factors and the league. 100 is average.
