Even Renteria acknowledges the Braves could trade him.

Link.

Edgar Renteria has shone for two seasons with the Braves and wants to return. But the shortstop has been around the game long enough to know it's possible he could be traded despite his solid performance and popularity.

The Braves would have a cheap, able replacement, Yunel Escobar, and Renteria could draw interest from teams looking for a steady player and lineup catalyst.

The Braves want to upgrade their starting rotation, and doing so via trade is usually more affordable than going on the free-agent market.

"I like it here, but I have no control over that," Renteria said. "If I come back, I'll feel comfortable here. If not, it was my privilege to play here."

The Braves want to upgrade the rotation. What about offering Marshall in a package for Renteria?

Marshall, Petrick, Pagan, Ohman for Renteria and Matt Diaz. Where do I sign?

There was a lot of talk about Renteria for either Garland or Arroyo around the trade deadline, FWIW.

marshall is no rotation upgrade for the braves. they'll want gallagher, to start with. and that only happens if mark prior is back and has grown a metal shoulder.

Marshall posted a sub 4.00 ERA. He's pretty much an upgrade at the back end of the rotation for almost every single team in the league. The Braves aren't one of the exceptions.

Smoltz

Hudson

James

Jo-Jo Reyes?

only trade for Renteria if he agrees to elbow the opposing 2nd basemen as part of his contract.

or if he lets Fontenot punch him in the face

Except that the guy can't seem to pitch more than 120 innings without losing his effectiveness. If he had been left in the rotation, he'd have finished with an ERA of 4.5+ the way he was going.

He really may be better out of the pen. Either way, I don't think he'll be in the mix for the 5th spot next season.

I'd trade Marshall, Gallagher a reliever and a position prospect for Renteria and a throw in. Edgar would really solidify the offense.

Yep. But I think that those deals didn't work because they would be taking a big salary back. I think if the Cubs offer Marshall and another pitcher close to the majors (Veal, Hart, Gallagher, Atkins, Holliman, Mateo) the deal could work. Braves would fill in the 4th spot in their rotation. Get another potential guy to compete for the 5th with Reyes, James, etc. And get out of Renteria's contract and can use that money and the Andruw Jones money to re-sign Teixeira and go out and get a #2-3 starter. Word is, they could have interest in Dontrelle in a trade.

There was discussion on Renteria a while back and the rumors I read hinted that the Braves would want 2 major league ready prospects. Marshall plus one other good prospect ought to get it done. That's why I preferred the Renteria talk over the Tejada deals.

I think Renteria is a much better fit. He could hit 2 or allow Derosa to be moved there and hit 6th behind Ramirez, and hopefully a legit 5-hitter in RF.

What did Atlanta give up to get Renteria? For some reason I was thinking they bought low when they got him.

Andy Marte

Thanks Bob...he was a top prospect wasn't he? Maybe they didn't buy low.

yes, he's with Cleveland now and not doing so hot, but he's still only 23.

Really?

Marshall made four consecutive starts where he allowed only 1 or 2 runs from July 5th to July 28th. He then had two rough starts where he got knocked around on August 2nd and 7th. But in his following four starts, he had an ERA of 3.20, and was subsequently pulled from the rotation (except for that spot start in the 2nd game of the Cards doubleheader, two weeks after his last start).

Don't let the fact that Lou kept pulling him early cloud your judgement. He simply wasn't pitching that badly. When you get down to it, there was absolutely no good reason to pull him from the rotation.

But that wouldn't hurt, it may just break Mike's hand

Amen. I don't want him anywhere near my team. Not even for free.

Renteria was 3rd in the NL in OPS as a SS, Theriot was 3rd from the bottom (over 200 points lower). Its not like he raped your mother.

So you don't want to make an upgrade at SS? Do you not want to win and then just spend all day on the internet talking about how your team has so much character?
