NO excuse not to win this game tonight.

Go Cubs!

Just because I'm the kind of jerk who can't help but to rain on a parade of optimism, there is no excuse for getting swept by the Marlins either, but they still found a way to pull it off.

Um, these are the Cubs. So I wouldn't say there's no excuse. That said, it'd be great to have them clinch this thing tonight, and one would think there's a legitimate shot for them to.

True.

If anyone ever asks me "Why do you think the Cubs won't _______?" I simply reply "They're the Cubs."

I remember watching that Game 6 back in 2003 and just knowing that the Cubs would find a way to lose. It's like reading the end of the book beforehand.

Yet I still get exciting hoping this story ends differently. I certainly hope it does.

I say we've got two choices. We can be optimistic for the next 4.5 hours or pessimistic. What's the benefit of our optimism? That we will be hurt more deeply later? Does our pessimism lessen the blow?

As true blue fans, we always expect the worse. If we don't expect it, maybe it won't happen? To victory, I say!

=D> Let's go Cubbies. DO THIS!

Oh, I have an excuse. I knew the series was bad news as soon as we lost (on some BS bloop crap, no less) the Lilly start. We had to win that one for any hope of winning the series, as there was no way we were winning both Marquis's and Trachsel's starts, and a pretty good chance we'd lose both against that offense.

So, there, an excuse.

Oh, and with Z, Hill, and Lilly all slated for this one, coupled with the Reds' injuries, there really is no excuse if they lose more than one game that matters.

Gonna rock my undefeated Rich Hill shersey tonight.
I'll be in Cincy and I'll be rockin' my undefeated shamrock boxer shorts (under my pants only-- unless we win). The last time I donned these beauties my beloved Kentucky Football Wildcats beat the Louisville 'Cards with a 57 yard TD with under 30 seconds to play. When I am in the stands with these things on, good things happen.

Of course you can count on your heart being stomped upon again and broken into several tiny pieces. But it won't happen tonight!!

rieu (Cambridge, MA): If the NL is AAAA, then is the NL Central AA? The Cubs have been eliminated from the wild card chase. Do we really have to award the Cubs a playoff spot?

SportsNation Keith Law: (2:41 PM ET ) I couldn't agree more. It's a shame that we could see two of the Phillies, Rockies, and Padres go home, but a team that couldn't even win 87 games in the worst division in baseball gets in.

All the more reason to hope the Mets get eliminated. I think his head would explode.

Well, I mean hey -- they've got a point.

Even though the Cards didn't deserve it last year and became champions.

However, I would point out that none of these other NL contenders are really screaming "great team" to me either. The entire NL is pretty flawed when you think of it.

Actually, when you really think of it -- there's no truly great powerhouse team in all of baseball, not even in the AL. Some of the great teams of yore would probably just rape every team in the league right now, even the Yanks and BoSox.
