Maybe it's my imagination but the teams that are out of the playoffs seem to act like they won the World Series when they beat a team that is fighting for a playoff spot. This situation seems to have livened up their seasons and I've seen it for years and every time I see the Mets or Yanks lose I see a huge celebration by the other team, especially if it's a winning run in the 9th. Don't get me wrong, I like to see the non contenders do this but, why do you think they do it? Is this their playoffs? Are their competitive juices flowing again once they feel the playoff tension? I just think it's interesting to see these "spoilers" continue to do this as they have for years.

Competition. It doesn't matter how bad teams are, they will compete against the best. A lot of these teams have young players battling to leave a good impression in the eyes of their organizations. They don't want to play minor league ball next year. For some of the veterans, or guys approaching free agency, they might catch the eye of a club in contention now and gain a job next season.

Chad Cordero got bombed last night by the Mets and then tore apart the dugout. He was on the top step to see Rauch get the last out and was there to congratulate him. The Nationals are playing as well as anyone right now.

Give me a few more of these teams to line up against the Brewers instead of the Cards, who tank in about the 6th inning of every game and then walk off the field like they're late for their vacation flights.

because they've won 3 in a row? they lost 4 in a row right before that

At least they haven't given up, like the Cards. It's interesting to see a team that won the World Series last year play with such a lack of pride.

Did Wainwright, Eckstein, Edmonds, Spiezo, Ankiel, Miles and that Pujols guy all of a sudden all become talentless bums?

Eckstein, 2007 Edmonds, Spiezio, Ankiel, Miles and a crippled Pujols? Yes, not to mention no Rolen.

As for the bolded no not all of a sudden, its been like that for awhile.

As for Edmonds, it hasnt been all of a sudden, its been this year, hes old and his body is beat up. Hes not the early 2000's Edmonds.

As for Pujols, the guy is hurt. He could barely make it around the bases last night.

Managers are willing to take risks as wel, such as dbl steals and squeeze plays. Players are willing to swing for the fences like Dunn on every pitch to pad their totals. thus making them more dangerous

Yanks aren't fighting for a playoff spot. They pretty much have it in the bag.

They've still got enough talent on that roster to not get blown out by 7 runs every game.

Time to face it: the Cards are tanking it. Thanks Tony.

The moment Pujols got hurt, yes. Edmonds has sucked all season now that he's old, Ankiel since everyone got the memo on the hole in his swing. Eckstein is ok, Spiezo and Miles suck. You got me on Wainwright having a horrid game against the Brewers.

The Cards are a unique situation due to them winning last year and being bounced out down the stretch this year, they've been to the top and do like they've been neutered.

Chick Gandil and Swede Risberg were at 1st and 2nd last night for St. Louis, and Bud Selig was seen drinking bathtub gin with Arnold Rothstein.

Did you know Chick Gandil could play first base without a glove? Isn't that amazing?

They must have been tanking it all year long then. To date, the Cards have 84 losses. By run differential

5: 4 (1 in Sept)

6: 8 (1 in Sept)

7: 5

8: 4 (2 in Sept)

9: 2

10: 5

11: 4 (2 in Sept)

13: 1

14: 1

17: 1 (1 in sept)

That is 35 of their losses, by 5 or more runs. That settles it, they have been tanking all year long.

Posted

I wouldn't say the Cards have been tanking it. They just have a tendency to get blown out in losses, thus the Pythagorean record for them.

Well, except against the Cubs last week, who didn't play well but managed 3 wins anyway.

Didn't look too hurt on that home run tonight.
