As for the HD feeds...DirecTV is insisting that they will have an HD feed from TBS in time for the playoffs. They're hyping it as part of their package of new HD channels coming up from the new satellite.

Don't know about the different cable companies as far as this is concerned, though.

Will there be an HD feed OTA?

Nope.

*rolls eyes* thanks for nothing, mlb.

Just pick up the HD package with your cable company for a month (assuming they will have TBS HD).

Limiting the audience for the MLB playoffs shows a complete lack of respect for fans without cable, and while it will probably be great for TBS, it isn't good for the sport. This is disgusting.

I probably wouldn't have worded it as strongly, but I essentially agree.

P.S. Why on earth is TBS hosting a playoff series? Good one, MLB.

Why don't any major local networks (CBS, ABC, NBC) except Fox show MLB games?

The same reason TBS is hosting a playoff series. $$$

I don't understand that. Why would limiting their audience make them more money? For commercials, isn't the mantra "the more, the merrier"?

Because TBS pays the MLB for the rights to broadcast. They outbid someone to get that series. Whatever hit the MLB takes in terms of lost advertising they gain via the broadcast agreement.

I live in Chicago (well a close suburb) and I don't have any sort of pay TV.

This sucks for me.

If I were you I'd be calling DirecTV or Comcast right now... That, or, if I had a cable modem, I'd be detaching that line of coax from my cable modem for 3-4 hours a few nights in the coming weeks.

Or you could just head to your local bar.

NLCS will also be on TBS, fyi.

Wow. I hope TBS will indeed have a HD feed up on DirecTV in time for the playoffs, then. Right now it's only TNT, there's no HD TBS yet.

OH MY GOD, HOW WILL PEOPLE WATCH THEIR BASEBALL IN ANYTHING BUT HIGH DEFINITION?!?

I know, the horror. I might just off myself, I dunno

To be fair, once you watch like 55% of your games (all the WGN and CSN home games, plus the occasional national game) in HD, the other half or so look pretty freakin crappy.

Yeah, I'll live. But once you get used to HD, other stuff looks pretty crappy. Like VHS compared to DVD.

I think it's ridiculous that MLB would allow TBS to not share the feed on a local channel.

I agree, but I don't foresee that much of a stir will be caused about it. Hell, most of the people on here didn't even know what I meant by an OTA simulcast.

I think I read a couple of years ago (I'm sure it's less now) that only like 10% of American homes didn't have pay TV, and a good sized chunk of that were people that didn't watch television at all.

I guess since I don't have an HD TV I really can't get into the whole HD craze. Yeah, it definitely looks better, not not so much that I feel like I'm really missing anything not watching it in HD.

With DVD's, I'm buying movies and TV shows that typically are shot to be of a certain expected level of "filmed" quality, so there I definitely appreciate any advances in picutre clarity much moreso than when I watch sports. As long as I can see what's going on, I'm good. HD really isn't ging to highlight something I'm going to miss otherwise.

Neither will color, really -- you'll still see the game as it happened for the most part. But I bet you wouldn't want to watch the Cubs in B&W

But I don't want to hijack the thread

I JUST WANT THE CUBS ON HD IN THE PLAYOFFS! 8-)

Yeah, I'd have to imagine there's an incredibly small number of people who want to watch baseball playoff games who don't have access to TBS.

I don't think it's ridiculous myself.

Yeah, it took me a long time to get my HD service straightened out, and it really does make a huge difference. All the faults of regular broadcasts just stand out now. It's comparable to the difference between getting a solid regular cable system and a less than perfect over the air signal in my opinion.

It's enough of a difference that I now deliberately watch programming in HD that I wouldn't have watched in SD.

...and I know that's not just me. Everyone I know is the same.

Kansas City with Plaza Gardens Cable.

Hopefully I'll be able to get the Cubs.

If you get TBS, you'll get the Cubs.
