If anyone out there doesn't have cable, it looks like there won't be local simulcasts like ESPN used to do now that it's on TBS.

This is, of course, just in case we make the playoffs.

Availability

Playoff games on TBS will not be made avaliable to local over-the-air broadcasters in the participating team's markets. Under the previous contract, ESPN was required to make those games avaliable on the air in local markets.

Of course, wiki isn't the best source, so I could be wrong. But just a heads up for anyone who might be affected.

I'm thinking what he's saying is that for example, the game in Chicago, it will be only shown to the regional areas, the game in Anaheim, it'll be shown in that regional areas, etc etc.

I'm guessing that TBS is showing what they want to show, and don't really give a rip about the others.

Of course, that's just my guess.

It means that TBS will not be simulcasting the playoff games on a local Chicago affiliate like ESPN used to.

So anyone without cable or satellite (or, more accurately, TBS) will be SOL in terms of being able to watch the Cubs in the playoffs.

No, when the games where the ESPN games they would allow local channels in Chicago to also broadcast the games. This says TBS won't allow that, so If you don't have cable you can't see the game at home. Edited by Brian

Not the case.

There are people in this country who do not have cable tv. They get local signal thru an antenea. they do not get TBS. In the past when ESPN covered the playoffs, They allowed local channels to carry the signal so these people without cable could watch their local team. TBS is not allowing this.

I have DirecTV, I'd hope I can watch the cubbies!

You'll be fine.

Perhaps I should've worded the subject differently, but, in this instance, satellite=cable for all intents and purposes.

Yes, it means people sitting in downtown Chicago won't get to see the Cubs if they don't have cable. Or satellite.

Of course you can just go to your local bar, but seems stupid to have to when your own team is playing a playoff game.

Limiting the audience for the MLB playoffs shows a complete lack of respect for fans without cable, and while it will probably be great for TBS, it isn't good for the sport. This is disgusting.

As for the HD feeds...DirecTV is insisting that they will have an HD feed from TBS in time for the playoffs. They're hyping it as part of their package of new HD channels coming up from the new satellite.

Don't know about the different cable companies as far as this is concerned, though.

I wonder what percentage of homes in the US don't have some form of pay-TV at this point. Particularly what percentage of homes of people who consider themselves avid sports fans.

Will there be an HD feed OTA?

Will I get the Cubs in Rochester NY?

Edit: I have Time Warner Digital Cable with TBS

Yes, this is really not a big deal unless you live in Chicago and don't have cable or satellite. If you don't have cable or satellite outside of Chicago, you wouldn't see the game anyway. Again, the only people affected by this are Chicagoans without cable or satellite.

*rolls eyes* thanks for nothing, mlb.
