At times I feel like Cubs fans are too critical. Justifiably so. But the Cubs went into St Lou and took three of four. The cards are now 7 back with 12 to play so they're effectively out of the race. The Cubs did exactly what they needed to do and stuck a fork in their primary rivals' collective season.

Nice job Cubbies, very well done. =D>

Now go get the Reds and stake a claim in the 2007 playoff picture.

Cardinals are bad bad bad baseball team. Walt Jocketty has been a joke of late as a GM.

Doesn't matter what the records are Cards Vs. Cubs are always a tough matchup. Cubs were terrible last year and still won the season (I think) series...

Cards are down to a .04609 chance to make the playoffs, according to the BP playoff odds report. They were at 3.something percent when I left to go to St. Louis on Friday afternoon.

First time in a long time (since the 60's, I believe) that the Cubs have won at least 10 vs the cards in 3 straight years, according to the broadcast the other day (IIRC).

True.... but I think we played them more often back in the 60's, too.

It probably doesn't get any worse than this for Cardinals fans. Not only is their beloved team sinking slowly into the depths of what will probably be the first losing season since 1999, but now the Cubs are trying to use the Cardinals as foot wipes.

This hasn't been one of La Russa's better months. His six-man rotation was a disaster that expedited the collapse. Other decisions backfired (see: Kip Wells). La Russa has acknowledged a strained relationship with players.

And in a display of terrible timing, La Russa twice sounded off about his managerial future in St. Louis. With his team drowning, is it appropriate for TLR to be promoting his potential availability on the job market?

In USA Today, La Russa informed prospective employers that he's willing to manage four more years.

Later, La Russa told the Post-Dispatch he didn't see "a whole lot of alternatives. There are not a lot of places that I could go manage."

So, La Russa would settle for returning to St. Louis if there's nothing better? Well, he may not have to worry about being stuck in the nation's best baseball town.

The national media immediately picked up La Russa's job application. Foxsports.com's Ken Rosenthal linked La Russa to potential openings in Cincinnati, Seattle, Los Angeles (Dodgers), Milwaukee and Philadelphia. Rosenthal said La Russa's presence on the open market would lead to a "bidding frenzy."

I'll be attacked for saying this, but it's bad form for Tony to be campaigning for jobs with his team in a free fall. Let me put it this way: If, in this same situation, a Cardinals player began openly touting his upcoming free-agency prospects, La Russa would blow a gasket. Remember how La Russa jumped Jim Edmonds last season for going public with dissatisfaction over his contract status?

I can't believe that Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt or any self-respecting Cardinals fan would find La Russa's conduct acceptable.

If La Russa wants to return, fine. He's earned it. But if he isn't happy, he should move on. And if any manager of the Cardinals is less than 100 percent committed to this franchise or their loyal fans, then it's time to go.

They were at 8.75646% chance.

They had peaked at a 21.50100% chance on Sep. 5th when they had climbed up to a 68-67 record.

while it was certainly nice to win 3 of 4, i personally thought the cubs looked terrible this weekend. maybe not the worst they've looked all year, but not much better than that. luckily for them, st louis is one of the worst teams in the league right now.

Larussa should be given a medal for taking the piece of crap team Jocketty gave him this year and even making the season exciting for the fans. Until recently, many of us believed the Cardinals could pull off another miracle season.

While I don't really care for Larussa , I do think that he did a commendable job this year and always seems to get the most out of his teams.

Yeah they didn't look like world beaters, exactly.

It was nice to end St. Louis' season (basically), just as we did in 2003. The parallel seemed pretty obvious to me. Not saying the final outcome will be the same of course.

Ya know, after posting the topic I thought the exact same thing. I don't want to take anything away from the accomplishment but both teams played poorly. Game 2 of the dh was as bad as I've seen the team play fundamentally in a while. Yesterday's game should have been 9-0 by the fifth but poor hitting/patience with runners on (again).

But that being said, Cardinal fans are the most obnoxious in the NL and come a close third to Boston and NY. Any time the Cubs can put them away AND take the season series, I applaud. It should not be enough to take the series from the Cardinals though. Gotta put the Reds, Bucs and Fish away to make the playoffs. Can't count on the Brewers to lose, the Cubs have to go out and get it. They should expect every game to be tough.

Two of three from the Bucs and Fish

Four of six from the Reds

Anything less (barring a clinch otherwise) is a failure.

It's pretty freaky. Hopefully we'll go on a roll like we did in 2003...

I don't think we have to win 8 games to make it. Less will likely do. And as such, less would not be a failure.

Cubs still have an outside shot at winning the season series from everyone in the division. If they can pull that off, they should win the division going away. Of course, it would take winning 5 of 6 from Cincy (5-7 at the moment, 4-2 would put them at 9-9) and sweeping the Pirates (also 5-7).

I find it amusing, actually, that the Pirates and Reds have had the best records in the division since August 10:

Pirates 21-17

Reds 19-15

Cubs 18-17

Brewers 17-18

Cardinals 17-19

Astros 14-20

Of course, I don't expect the Cubs to win 8 of 9 against those teams, but it would certainly take much of the drama out of the remainder of the schedule. 7-5 should be enough (say, 3-3 vs the Reds, and 4-2 against the Marlins and Pirates), but a lot hinges on how the Brewers do on the road this week.

Mulder, Maroth, Miles at SS, and countless other head-scratchers have certainly been exciting.
