Just got back from the game. Holy crap, what an amazing 9th inning!! What's this about the game being protested? I don't understand what happened. I didn't see anything that warranted the game being protested.

I can't imagine that this game would rank up there with George Brett as the only two games which the league office has seen fit to step in and overrule the umpires the next day. Umpires get enough scrutiny as it is, and it would create a HUGE controversy on more than just the Selig-owns-the-Brewers level. Umpires have had no problem calling Lou out and not letting him make the switch. If they didn't see fit to do so today, there's no way Selig goes back and corrects them.

Sarcastically says he;s happy for the fans, a pretty funny moment. Said he's not very happy.

 

Said he didn't walk the bases loaded to give the pitcher some leeway with his pitches. Doesn't want to load the bases if he doesn't have to.

 

Thinks the umpires are wrong. Manager must go directly to umpire and not cross line. Umpire said he could do that but Mackanin told him he thought he was wrong. Said Lou was wasting time to get his pitcher some time to warm up. Thought the umpires disregarded the rule.

 

 

the rule would make no bloody sense if that's the way it worked. what if a manager wants to talk to his pitcher to get an idea of how he's feeling, his confidence level, etc. before making the change?

 

Not sure, but he's referring specifically to a double switch, not just a regular pitching change.

 

that's what I am saying. there's no rule that you can't go to the mound to check on your pitcher only to decide you want to pull him and make a double switch at that time.

When Lou made the double switch to put in Soto, he got halfway to the mound, then walked back to the ump to tell him about the switch. The rule states that you have to inform the ump before crossing the baseline. Soto was the next batter for the Cubs, in what would have been the pitcher's spot.

No idea on where to find it yet, but - I don't remember it too clearly, as I was having an aneurism at the time as well, but I think Santo's call on the Ramirez double is a little more vintage Santo than on the final play. Definitely remember to check out the tying hit.

That's so awesome. DeRosa is always so animated when someone else is the walkoff hero, so it's cool to see him being the one to get mobbed this time. It's fun to see how much he enjoys his job.

because, as I have said, it's a two step process. not only did the umps misinterpret the pinetar rule, the misinterpretation certainly had an outcome on that game, ie. taking away a three run homer and declaring the batter out instead.

Yeah, I listened to both. I don't even remember Santo on the final call. It was all Pat...Derosa..ground ball....Cubs win! Off of the glove of Weathers! That is about all I remember. It wasn't all that memorable of a call.

 

The funny thing about the rant that the Cubs were lucky is that Ron had a big rant in the 8th inning about how everything had gone the Reds way tonight, from check swings to diving catches to ....(can't remember all of it). Ron usually roots like a fan, but he doesn't usually rant like that so that made me believe him a little more (I missed the 4th-part of the 7th).
