I'm surprised Hart is coming up. There was some talk of it earlier, but that was when they thought a 6th starter would be needed for the St. Louis DH, before the Trachsel trade. And I certainly wasn't expecting Fuld to come up. It seems to me that it isn't common to bring up players not yet on the 40-man.

This would leave Fox and Petrick as those most notably absent from the September callups.

I can understand them wanting to shut down Petrick with his injury history. Fox might have no future left in the Cubs organization.

Fuld has great numbers against righties. Might prove to be a solid bat off the bench. I see no reason not to stock the bench with these guys to the fullest extent we can...

Extra inning ball games always seem to arise in Sept and we have enough backup, we hope?

Fuld's definitely a shock. If I'm understanding you correctly, TT, I disagree(I'm assuming you mean this is a token rostering and then he'll be set free in the offseason) Fuld is only 25, and I don't understand the rationale behind a move like that. Then again I don't really see the need for him now either.

I've lost track of it (especially with the new CBA), but it could be that Hart and Fuld would need to be added to the 40-man to protect them from Rule 5 in the off-season anyway. If that's the case, given that the 40-man was only at 38, there's no harm in adding them now rather than the off-season. This wouldn't affect the option clock, as an option is used by sending a player down, not bringing him up.

I do wonder if this is an indication that Guzman isn't coming back this year. Since he's on the 60-day DL, bringing him back would require a position for him on the 40-man, and after these moves there isn't one remaining.

Yeah, Fuld and Hart needed to be protected this offseason. Kind of surprised Fuld got added now because I figured his AFL visit was basically a tryout to get added. And Hart was supposed to be starting game one for the SL playoffs.

wowowowow sam fuld was my favorite player when he was with the chiefs

i say we start him in cf for two weeks just to see how things work out. if it goes badly, we can go back to someone else after that.

This leaves 34 on the roster, 16 pitchers 18 position players.

Cotts, Mateo, Samardzija, Petrick, and Fox the only non-DLd guys not called up.

Likely meaning Cotts and Fox are the first 2 to go should spots need to be opened on the 40 man next offseason.

Yeah, Cotts is most definitely going to be gone. He is making 825K this year, and will be making too much money next year for the Cubs to even consider keeping him if they aren't even going to bring him up as a September callup.

I can't be the only person that has absolutely no idea who Hart is. Anyone wanna fill me in?

Kevin Hart.

He's a RHP we received from Baltimore this past spring in exchange for Freddie Bynum.

Sinker/slider type - decent, not overwhelming stuff, reportedly.

At first, I thought Bo Hart was joining the team... so you're not alone!

How much of a big deal financially is this for these guys? Are they going to make more in a month than they did the rest of the year?? What are these guys likely making?

CF drafted several years ago out of Stanford. LH bat with a pretty solid approach at the plate and a strong defender, ceiling of a 5th outfielder. Remember Adam Greenberg? He's pretty much another incarnation of that skillset.
