People that boo players based on performance are fickle moronic idiots. It's so stupid that it's beyond my comprehension how fans can cheer a player for two months and the minute they struggle they get booed not sporadically, but by the entire crowd.

It's classless, bushleague, philly type crap, and it doesn't surprise me that even people in here are ripping him. The guy has been our best pitcher BY far, for the last 4 years. He's built up some equity.

The fact that he actually cares, is his downfall. In a time with athletes that don't give a crap about fans and what they think, you could genuinely tell that Z cared about that reaction. It's actually refreshing to me. I agree 100% with everything he said, although fans might not be selfish, they are certainly hypocritical idiots. he signed for less money because he really wanted nothing more than to be a Cub for life. And with that he is rewarded by the crap yesterday.

The only reason players should be booed is for lack of effort. And no one wants to win more than Carlos. I'm embarrassed about what Wrigley is turning into.

I just want to quote this for it's pure awesomeness. Way to go Badger.

Though I highly doubt Zambrano initiated the apology, it was a good one....and in my opinion, undid what he said yesterday.

I still have no problem with fans boo'ing. Call it bush-league, classless, or whatever, fans have a right to do it. It's the way they can communicate to the player. Same goes for cheering. It's the fans way of expressing how they feel -- good or bad.

And the comment about supporting him for two months and then booing THE MINUTE he screwed up is not quite accurate. One only needs to look at his last five starts and the first two months of the season to refute that.

Cubs fans are forgiving and I'm sure Carlos did the right thing today. He will be given a big warm hug by the crowd.

And btw, Badger, I'm glad that you never express your displeasure in a verbal way to anyone or anything in your life. I'd be very interested to read all of your posts and see how many times you called players "idiots" or a similar term. If you have been a gentleman with your thousands of posts, then I will say you are an honorable man. Otherwise, you are a hypocrite.

Wow.

"He's built up some equity"? Are you serious? The supposed ace who is getting paid more than any other pitcher in history and Cub fans are making excuses for him getting booed over his absolute horses**t pitching during the most important stretch of the year? That is mind-boggling.

Here's a suggestion Carlos: Shut up and start pitching like the supposed "ace" you're getting paid to be. And then people will stop that oh-so-unfair booing.

I'm paraphrasing DeRosa: When you perform well, you get cheered. When you perform badly, you get booed. Amazing how such a simple concept is so hard to understand.

Maybe a list of "Players not to boo based on built up equity" should be handed out before all games for those who want to voice their opinion over poor play and performance.

People blow this booing crap way out of proportion. He was booed by a bunch of people who were rooting for the Cubs to win an important game. His performance was terrible and the way he crumbled in that inning was awful. Z let everyone down and they let him know about it.

It's not like the fans are now holding some grudge against Z. I'm sure he'll be lustily cheered the next time he pitches. I'm also sure there will continue to be a large amount of people wearing #38 in the crowd today, tomorrow and the next few years. Carlos blew it out of proportion like many people do, but honestly, it's not that big of a deal. Carlos is plenty supported by Cubs fans.

Maybe booing is lame, but it's an emotional reaction, it's going to happen, and Carlos needs to get some thicker skin.

"fans have the right to boo"

What a silly statement. Everyone has rights does it make it acceptable? There are better ways to show your displeasure over the outcome of a game then literally being a bully.

Wait, so you're saying that booing somebody is bullying them? That makes no sense.

"He's got good stuff," Piniella said. "I thought he was throwing the ball well yesterday, and it sort of came unglued after that run through the streets of Pamplona. I think it tired him out."

i am sure you have all read this quote...but...oh my god is that just super classic!!!

"the streets of Pamplona!"

anyway, i am not mad at zambrano...all of us who care about this team have been riding emotions since the first pitch on April 2nd...emotions that have taken me WAY DOWN and emotions that have taken me WAY UP

the players are no different

as far as booing is concerned...i don't boo my team...but...i respect other people's right to boo even if i may not agree with the reaction...

bottom line...this may very well be the turning point this team needs...a little blowup after a very tough month...

they still have time to tie this thing together

I'd like to know how you're supposed to show your displeasure aside from booing. Create signs insulting his performance while you're at the game? Throw moltov cocktails?

I'm just surprised people got upset when someone known to be incredibly emotional overreacted to being booed by 40,000~ people after having a really bad day on the mound.

I dont think anybody was surprised with the way he reacted too it, its pretty much what I expected. But like Ive said numerous times, I just felt it really odd that a player with Z's emotions, 2 hours later, would call out the fans for showing emotion in the heat of the moment.

Yours is a much sillier statement.

Yes, this. Non-story, IMO. What would you expect from Zambrano? It's not a big deal. He said something stupid in the heat of the moment (even if it was two hours later) and he apologized. I suspect most that have played competive sports have done the same. I know I have.

So it is not bullying to point out someone's faults and then making a spectacle of them?

Showing that you dislike someone's actions is easy enough in more constructive ways. Don't go to the game, ignore the action altogether, write concerned letters. What purpose does booing have?

Alright then, what purpose does cheering have? Write letters of appreciation instead.

What purpose? It's immediate action. Who's going to write letters because you don't like the play of your fav sports team. That's not very realistic.

Sweet Lou on booing:

"The best way to quiet them is to go out and do well," said Piniella, who has heard his share of boos while playing and managing in New York. "They'll cheer you right back. The same way players get frustrated, fans get frustrated. You don't like to see players booed, but it's part of the emotion.

"You turn a deaf ear to that and go about your business as a professional. You do good things, and they'll cheer you again. I think the only sport they don't boo you is golf."

It's the only immediate satisfaction I can think of for fans to let a player, manager or team know right away that you are not satisfied with the results on the field.

Throwing tomatoes would be deemed unacceptable. Throwing batteries or spilling your drink would be unacceptable. Screaming profanities is unacceptable. Making boo noises is not unacceptable. You hear them in nearly every sporting venue in the world.

I don't even want to read this thread, because I'm sure it's full of plenty of posts that are major idiots.

The practice of calling posts an idiot is merely a proxy for calling a poster an idiot. It is also not acceptable.

You have every right to boo. But booing a highly emotional player who's just signed a five year contract is beyond stupid. Go ahead and boo if it makes you feel better about yourself. But telling yourself it's doing anything to help the situation is a mistake, IMO.
