If Phillips were to throw at Pujols, there would've been no chance for Phillips to be able to claim he was throwing to 1B, it would've been 10 feet up the 1B line into RF.

Phillips needs to get rid of that ball quicker after he pushed off the bag rather than an extra shuffle step. That extra shuffle step might've been to avoid hitting Pujols w/the ball, which is Phillips' fault for being a puss.

If the runner is between you and the target, the runner will move or get hit and it's a out with all runners returning to their previous base, it's a win/win.

I haven't seen the play, but that sounds alot different than the way it was described earlier in the thread.

however, I believe as long as the runner doesn't make any deliberate attempt to interfere with a throw, the ball is still in play after it hits him. if he deliberately interferes, it should be interference, runner out, play dead.

those that remember the mid 80's might remember Wally Backman throwing his arm up to block the ball while in a rundown. ump ruled he didn't attempt to interfere, ball rolled away, runners ran. whether the runner being out at the time makes a difference, I have no idea, but don't know why it would.

but bottom line is the fielder has to pretend there's no runner there and throw the ball. now if Pujols is just standing there and let's it hit him, I think a strong argument could be made that is a deliberate attempt to interfere with the throw. if he attempts to duck and it hits him, no interference.

I love BP, but who is this "Ryan" Phillips you speak of?

Wow. I'm going to go google ryan phillips because I don't even know if that is a real person.

I had been drinking, but that's barely an excuse.

Phillips just needs to throw the ball and not worry about the runner. If the throw hits him, it hits him.

Either way there should be no hard feelings. Each guy's just doing his job.

There would have been hard feelings and then some if Phillips had thrown at Pujols. Albert would've been pissed that someone called him out.

I didn't see this play so I have no opinion on it . . . but I do think the umps need to start calling interference more often. Some of these "slides" are getting out of control. The reaching the bag thing isn't a rule either, I don't believe.

They called a pretty blatant one in one of the Mets-Phillies games the other day. The Mets player interfered and it ended the ball game.

But yeah, I agree. Some of these are getting ridiculous.

I think I caught a clip of that passing a TV in a restaurant - wasn't it more of a dropkick than a slide?

The second base end of a double play has always been the most unregulated part of the game, with the takeout slides and the whole 'vicinity of the bag' rule the umps call, rather than requiring the first end of the double play to actually touch the base while holding the ball. It's a really tough line to draw, much like coddling a quarterback and flagging every piece of concact for 15 yards vs feeding him to the wolves and making him fear for his life.

For those who didn't see it, Here is the link to the mlb.com video of this play. Just click on 'Video Top Plays' for the Mets-Phillies game. It should be the first highlight up but if, for some reason, it isn't, just click on 'Interference call ends game'.

Brandon Phillips is an idiot, it wasnt interference because Pujols was still within reach of the bag. It is not Pujols job to get out of the way to make his throw easier. So he needs to shut up and stop saying he is going to throw a ball at someones head.

Maybe if he had go-go-gadget arms. Pujols veered off to the left and clearly wasn't going for the base, he was running right at Phillips. Next time he does that someone should put a baseball in his face, because he's asking for it with that type of maneuver.

Based on those pictures, Phillips had moved away and Pujols ran at him. Yep, Phillips should have just thrown it at his noggin.

I think Pujols was wrong here.

Off topic, but how in the hell are you a Cards fan, and a 49ers fan?

I grew up (and still live) in North Dakota. We don't have a professional sports team here. A lot of people just like Minnesota teams, but I never felt obligated to like them.

I wasn't really much of a sports fan growing up. At around the time of 5th grade (think 1997 or so), my friends started getting me interested in the NFL. With the 49ers essentially being fresh off of a dynasty, there were bandwagon fans everywhere -- my friends included. I started liking who they started liking (fear not, I have continued liking them through the journey through hell that is the last few years).

As for the Cardinals? Well, the first time I remember being interested in them was after a friend of mine mentioned "Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey, Jr." I knew very little about baseball at the time, but I did know Griffey's name. We were about to play a home run derby, and I go, "shotgun Griffey!" Much to my surprise, my friend revealed I hadn't even selected the best slugger -- that title belonged to a man by the name of "McGwire." This planted the seed.

That game came out mid/early 1998. The game was fun to play, and so I gave watching baseball a try. '98 was, of course, the same year McGwire / Sosa went on that epic run. Because of the home run chase, the Cardinals had a lot of nationally televised games (as did the Cubs on WGN). As a result, I started watching a lot... and soon, I became a fan.

Couple of thoughts/comments:

- If Sosa had "won" the race, would I be a Cubs fan today? (I say this tongue in cheek because I remember rootin' for McGwire the whole way.)

- Despite McGwire's best efforts, Brian Jordan was my favorite Cardinal.

- Earliest 49ers game I have memories of watching was a 34-17 win against the Broncos on Monday Night Football in 1997... I do, however, remember I fell asleep at halftime because I was simply not used to staying up that late.
