Lou could have made the catcher situation a lot simpler by not wasting plate appearances on stiffs like Koyie Hill and Rob Bowen, which might be the dumbest thing Lou has done all season. He could have requested that Soto be called up immediately after Barrett left. I doubt Hendry would have refused.

That's true. I think leaving Soto to rot in the minors in favor of Hill & Bowen will still go down as a major mistake this season.

Most managers are going to be gunshy switching catchers in the middle of a playoff hunt, though. If they were each LF's, it would likely be different.

They've been in a playoff hunt for months and have switched catchers more frequently than any position on the team. Lou doesn't seem to have problems switching catchers, it's specifically switching out experience for quality that gives him the willies.

Maybe I'm not remembering things real well, but weren't the Cubs the hottest team in baseball when Bowen and Hill were catching? I don't blame Lou at all for not being too concerned about offensive production from the Catcher's position at that time.

How does having a great year at AAA and building his confidence equate to rotting? The book is still out on Soto. The way some people are talking about him, he is the next Johnny Bench. Hill was hitting .300+ in Iowa and we all saw how his numbers changed when he was called up.

It's not very smart to take on the "well, we're winning despite X" theory and ignore a glaring problem. Anybody with half a brain knew that winning streak wouldn't last. You don't wait until after a problem becomes a glaring hole to address it.

Ya, that's pretty bad, though it would have been a lot more AB's under Dusty, and from the 2 hole. "Double leadoff, dude!"

Hill's also 4 years older and was slugging about 200 points less.

Was this thread about Trachsel? I forgot.

Anyway, I dug up this tid-bit.

I had forgotten Marshall started the season on the DL and pitched 0 innings in ST. Anyone else think Trax was brought in because Marshall is experiencing pain?
