When I heard the news that Monroe got dealt to the Cubs, my first thought was that Murton's days as a Cub are numbered or over.

After thinking about it, I agree with Dude, I think Monroe becomes a terrific guy in a pinch-hitting role and fortifies the bench. As far as who gets shipped out, I think Fox goes back to Iowa.

Bottom line is the bench gets better and the team is better.

Agreed. As long as Monroe is used as a RH off the bench or as a platoon player against lefties, then this trade makes the team better. Fox didn't look good in his short time with the team, and now we can get Jacque out of the lineup against lefties.

Jeromy Burnitz did a great job for the Cubs.

No, actually he sucked.

Your assesment of his contributions suck.

Burnitz played 160 games of solid RF. He scored 84 runs, hit 24 HR, and drove in 87 on a bad team.

Yeah, with a .322 OBP and .435 SLG. Pretty bad for a corner outfielder. Didn't even come close to doing a "great job"

I really like this pickup. good bench guy for the home stretch.

Someone ban this poster. Positive comments on a Hendry trade are strictly forbidden on here.

point is Hendry's been damn good in the FA market and hasn't made one of his "crappy" signings in a couple of years.

Damn good? $100m and we're barely over .500, and he's been damn good?

Or we could be the White Sox?

Over 100m and in last place?

Some guys find anyway to bitch about anything that happens trade-wise.

We could get Albert Pujols in a trade for Derrek Lee, and sign him to a 7 year deal, and people would still complain.

And then we could get Vlad, and people would still complain about getting him because we traded away our best prospects.

it's never ending.

(I'm not stating Monroe is anywhere close to the talent of these two guys, but give the guy a chance before you bitch about it.)

Do you seriously think we'd be complaining if we had Pujols and Vlad on the team? Come on.

I'd be complaining. About how impossible it was to get Cubs WS tickets.

He also replaced Sosa. What type of year did Sammy have?...

He hit .258/.322/.435 for a 96 OPS+ as a Right Fielder. He was pretty bad.

What does it matter how poorly the previous guy does?

This reminds me of St. Louis picking up Wilson last year. Both Wilson and Monroe were absolutely horrible with their respective teams before being DFA'd.

I don't know how it will turn out but I don't necessarily think it was a bad pickup. There outfield has been horrible this year.

And look at how Kendall turned out.

This is exactly what I was going to post. This is a very Jocketty-esque move of picking up a person who can be helpful when used correctly at the nadir of his trade value. I think it's a smart move and hopefully will pay off.

If Monroe is replacing Fox/Pagan then I don't mind the deal at all. Not a bad pick up IF used propertly.

If he's coming in to to essentially replace Murton it's really, really stupid.

So did I miss when Hendry brought a World Series to Chicago with 100 + million payroll in basically every year hes been here? Hendry has destroyed what was a top 3 minor league system when he got here, and hasnt won anything in Chicago. The Cubs under Hendry have either been average, or below average since he got here, and thats with a 100+ million payroll to work with, but for those of you who like mediocrity go ahead and keep praising Hendry, because that is exactly what he has brought to this team since being the GM of Chicago.

It is so true!

I guess I still don't understand what it means to use Monroe properly. In < 100 ABs this year against LHP, he's been good. But last year in 140-ish ABs against LHP he was terrible. '05 - great against LHP. '04 - terrible.

If we trade him nothing and he doesn't do anything other than PH against LHP, that's harmless. But it sounds like Lou is going to run him out there to start against LHP and I question whether that's a good move.

Cool down. I don't think many people here are praising Hendry's job as GM. I know I'm not. We're just saying this is a smart move.

Hendry was a primary reason for building up that farm system in the early part of the decade.

Monroe will not get 35 starts. He's a cog that the Cubs didn't have yesterday: a bench player with power against lefties. I'll reserve my judgment until we see what we gave up. I can easily see Cotts or another underperformer from the 40 man roster.

Since others have pointed out the flaws in the rest of your post, I'll point out the flaws in this part...

No one is saying that things couldn't be worse. They absolutely could...Dusty Baker has shown us that light. But the response was about Hendry being "damn good"...when the truth is he's been just ok. He made some good deals, he made some bad ones...and he made some that had plusses and minuses. But there's nothing to show that he's been damn good. The Cubs could win the division just because we suck the least. That doesn't mean that Hendry spent the money had efficiently.

All that said, as long as Monroe is just used as a bat off the bench, this deal is ok. Nothing huge.

There are some who are saying this is a smart move, but there is an awful lot of Hendry ass kissing going on in this thread by some people.

And hes been a primary reason for tearing up that farm system. As a GM hes torn it apart, so I dont think its too crazy to think maybe Hendry is overmatched as a GM.

No doubt, I'm not a fan of his as a GM but I did want to point out that Hendry was the reason the farm looked so good in 2002.

Monroe probably replaces Jacque against LHP. I fail to see how that couldn't be a good move. At Monroe's worst against LHP, he's still better than Jacque against LHP. Until Soriano comes back, he may replace Fox, and the same thing applies.
