Chicagoans, there is a tornado watch in Cook County. Have no idea where the tornado was spotted though

 

Tornado Watch/Warning has more to do with the type of weather pattern than actually spotting a tornado. If a system has the right elements for a tornado, then the watch/warning will go out, regardless of whether or not a tornado has actually been spotted.

 

Weather.com says:

 

A tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar in your area - seek shelter immediately!

 

Outshined is right about watches though. You guys are under a tornando warning. A tornado watch means conditions are ripe for a tornado but there haven't necessarily been any. A tornado warning means a tornado has been spotted. Watches tend to cover larger regions while warnings are localized.

 

I realize that, I misreported the news. I saw warning, but heard there were tornadoes touching down, and thought that watch was worse.

 

Damn Cubs, Cain is settling down.

not totally true, a lot of tornado warnings are issued because the velocity radar shows a couplet - winds moving in opposite directions, which is indicative of a mesocyclone which are associated with tornadoes. If they waited until tornadoes were sighted they'd warn too late in a lot of cases.

 

In this case....

 

...A TORNADO WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 400 PM CDT FOR EASTERN

DUPAGE AND COOK COUNTIES...

 

* AT 324 PM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RADAR CONTINUED TO

INDICATE ROTATION NEAR ELMWOOD PARK MOVING EAST AT 45 MPH...

 

THE TORNADO WILL BE NEAR...

LOGAN SQUARE...HUMBOLDT PARK...LINCOLNWOOD...BY 335 PM...

LAKEVIEW...ROGERS PARK...CHICAGO...AND EVANSTON BY 340 PM...

wow it just got REALLY dark outside.

 

i heard there are tornado warnings in Chicago?

 

I dont know about Chicago but the storm that just came thru the central IL area was crazy. Ripped roofs off houses and knocked a bunch of power lines over, some of the hardest winds Ive ever seen.

 

It thundered and blew around a little bit and rained for about 5 minutes where I am, but that was about it.

Well I just lost my WGN arrrgh

 

I lost it for a couple of minutes. Now it's on and off.

 

Mine is still off, but all my other channels are good. These storms suck. Im in central IL and the winds that came through here were devastating.
