From Sunday's Newark Star-Ledger:

the Cubs are considering bringing up Jeff Samardzija when rosters expand Sept. 1. Samardzija, who's best known as a Notre Dame wide receiver, is now a pitcher in the Cubs' system and has impressed since being promoted from Class-A Daytona to Double-A Tennessee.

If he is used when we are down by 7 or 8 runs in a blowout game, I don't have a problem with it. If he saves the bullpen by throwing 3 or 4 innings when Marquis gets taken out in the 3rd, I say go for it.

How does this work with his options and what not? That may change my mind a bit.

This has no effect on options. He's already on the 40-man roster (major league contract) and the option for this year was burned when he was sent down. Once the option is used for the year he can be called up and sent back down an unlimited umber of times, and it still counts as one option.

And I'd guess that if he can keep sharp in the pen its not awful that he doesn't pitch as frequently as he would in the Minors because he's probably already thrown more innings than he ever has before.

Well anybody on the 40 man can be called up in September and I don't think that affects options IIRC.

Good news, if he's on the team the Notre Dame luck will cancel out any remaining bad Cubs luck

I don't like this. He's coming off the most innings he's ever pitched. Just shut him down after the minor-league season. Save his arm.

Right. Calling a player up doesn't burn an option; sending him down does (and that has already been done for this year anyway).
I'm surprised no one has pointed out the lack luster reputation the Newark Star Ledger has.
Actually that was pointed out in the minor league forum where the same topic is being discussed.

Well I'm glad we're not rushing him.

do you really think this could have a negative effect, though? I don't see it.

I think it just feeds the irrational and unhealthy fan attention to the situation. The guy has a long way to go before he'll be able to help the team. Yet with the huge contract, unjustified promotion already this year, and a potential call-up, fans are going to be expecting him to start next year in Wrigley and be good. We've already seen how little patience people have with other young players, there's no need to throw-in the added burden of expectations that a September call-up would bring.

but no negative effect on Jeff's development or roster status/clock? That's what I think of when I hear a prospect is "rushed."

Maybe it won't...but why take the chance? I just don't see what the benefit is to bringing him up. All risk and no reward from my point of view.

Man, this is interesting I was just wondering the same thing earlier this morning. I think this would really add a little excitement to the current roster, given all the little intangibles that "Smidj" brings to the team PLUS I trust that Lou would put him in a situation where he could succeed and that he wont overwork his arm. I say do it Cubs!

Bringing him to the majors is rushing him. Exposing him to major league hitters, when he's barely even able to handle minor leaguers, and has very little experience, could easily have a negative effect. It's not just about the mechanics of options and roster status.

I think people are afraid to bring players up because of the Corey situation. I think there is a going trend the last couple of years in MLB to bring up some of the younger players earlier rather than later. I don't see how bringing him up could be a negative experience unless he is mentally weak or something, which I doubt.
