He seemed like a great guy. When I was younger I sent him something and asked him to autograph it, and he not only autographed it, but he sent back a note (not pre-printed either) as well. RIP Scooter.

Former Yankee shortstop and broadcaster Phil Rizzuto died at 89 early this morning according to Yahoo Sports. No cause of death has been announced yet.

I would assume he died of old age. It really drives me crazy that reporters need to find a cause of death when someone dies at 85 or 90 years of age.

yeah, but crossing that line -- making assumptions about details -- could lead to lazy and innacurate journalism, if it becomes a habit.

Because we know the American media is so honest?

Seems like the last thing we should allow an already slanted media is more leeway in the information reporting.

To be honest, I always laugh (well, not the right word) when I see the "unknown causes" in these cases, too, FWIW :)

Seriously, though. I'm too young to really appreciate the guy (I remember the Rizzuto bobbledhead on Seinfeld ;)), but he was clearly one of a kind. RIP.

I believe it was a key chain that said holy cow. But that was what I thought of also.

What a big part of my baseball childhood he was, he'll be missed and when he said, "Hey White" you knew something interesting was coming. I really never liked the Yanks but I really enjoyed the Scooter and Bill White.

Ten Bucks says ESPN uses 30 minutes of SportsCenter to cover this.

Over Bonds coverage, I'll take it.

Ditto.

I grew up splitting time between Chicago/Evanston and Westchester Cnty. Thus I grew up with Harry and The Scooter, and I adored both of them. I watched Yankees games on WPIX largely b/c of Scooter and Bill White, a perfectly mismatched pairing. Steinbrenner treated him like dirt at the end of his run in 96'. He deserved better.
