How were those runs un earned?

 

The inning should be over if not for the Atkins error.

 

AKA, Baseball's traditional game scoring is really stupid.

 

I don't see what the big deal is. The inning should be over so the runs should be unearned.

 

So why should the pitcher be allowed to go willy nilly and give up home runs and other things the defense isn't related to? ERA in general is stupid. Its much too much subjective, and the ability to completely end all scoring on a pitcher after an error is stupid with 2 outs too.

 

Because it wouldn't be the pitcher's fault that the inning was still going on in the first place. If the defense doesn't make the error than the other runs don't get allowed that inning.
