Can't really even believe Dopirak. I remember in '04 watching him pound HRs out at Fitch Park like they were golf balls. I was sure he would make an impact at the bigs for us.

Shows what I know.

Looking at Dopirak's numbers, and I'm curious why he was promoted to Tennessee in '06 instead of starting out at Daytona again (don't normally see a .670 OPS warrant a promotion to AA). I wasn't nearly as caught up on our farm system as I am now, so I'm wondering what the rationale there might've been (perhaps at 22, he was simply kept in-line per his age). Thanks in advance.

He was rostered too early and he had the pressures of his option clock working against him. Derostering him now stops the clock and gives him a chance to reestablish some value, be that here or with another organization.

Regardless, he'll probably wind up being nothing.

I remember going to a game in late 2004 at Wrigley when he was given the award for Cubs Minor League POY. He looked so happy to be there, and looked like he was ready to make a quick rise to the majors. Unfortunately, that was probably the peak of his career with the Cubs.

What does Designated for Assignment mean for Dopirak?

Did we release him?

Does getting rid of Wade Miller open up another roster spot?

Every team in baseball will have a chance to take Dopirak.

However, if they want him, they will have to put him on their 40-man roster. It is unlikely, but not impossible, that any team will want to do that.

If no team chooses to take him under those terms, we can send him to the minor league club of our choosing.

This winter, we will have another chance to re-add him to the 40-man roster. If we don't, Dopirak will be eligible to be selected in December's Rule 5 draft.

Since Wade Miller was on the 60-day DL, he was not occupying a spot on the 40-man roster. As such, releasing him does not free up a spot.

Because Dopirak is on the 40-man, the Cubs had to DFA him just as they would anybody else. They've got 10 days to trade him. Failing that, if he clears waivers, they can outright him to the minors, taking him off the 40-man. Miller was on the 60-day DL and not on the 40-man.

Right. the 40-man move with Dopirak created a spot for E-Patt. The Miller move was a cutting-ties type sito, and didn't affect the 40 man. What I'm wondering is why was Patterson's clock started, he being another infielder, when bringing up Pie was the obvious choice? This team is an OF short, at the very least. is Cedeno still on the 25 man?

Patterson is going to be playing some OF.

Daytona News-Journal:

Dopirak was not able to play because the Chicago Cubs removed him from the 40-man roster, designating him for assignment, and opening up the possibility that another organization willing to put him on its 40-man roster could select him off the waiver wire. The 23-year-old slugger had been climbing up the Florida State League's home run charts with 15 dingers and 50 RBIs, leading the Cubs in both categories. He was batting .272 in 254 at-bats.

Chicago had to take someone off its 40-man roster because it promoted Eric Patterson from Triple-A Iowa to fill in for injured Alfonso Soriano.

Dopirak had not heard anything as of Monday night, and according to multiple sources he has to be on the waiver wire for 48 hours. If he clears waivers, meaning no team claims him, then the Cubs can reassign him.

They aren't worried about starting his option years because they believe hes basically major league ready. They aren't worried about starting his service clock because they aren't the Devil Rays.

Doesn't selecting him in the Rule 5 draft mean he has to be kept on the 25-man roster for the entire following season? Or does that depend on which minor league roster he's put in the off-season?

It seems to make more sense for someone with interest to claim him now rather than in the Rule 5 draft.

Yes, that's what it means. No, it doesn't depend on that. That affects the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft.

I agree.

Brian Dopirak is in Daytona's lineup today - it looks like he made it through waivers and got back to the Cubs.

When Dopirak was drafted, I remember all the scouts saying he either would turn into a 40 home run a year hitter or flame out in AA. Looks like they pegged him perfectly.

Just out of curiosity, do we have several of the same scouts as we did years ago or have we had some turnover. I'm asking because I'm wondering if we have the same scouts that swore guys like Dubois, Kelton, Montanez, et al would be very good major leaguers or if many are gone now.
