Dear offense, please make Maine work. At least a little. And if you could get the ball out of the infield and get someone on base, that'd be great. kthanksbyebyenow.

I love the uneducated assumption by national media that Wrigley is a bandbox and we should be hitting tons of homers there

Not to defend McCarver/Buck but this team should have more home runs that it has no matter where they play.

Oh I agree that we should have more homers but the national media assumes that the place is a launching pad every day when that is just not the case

It's true that there's a misperception about Wrigley.

When Chicagoans spot Fox baseball announcer Joe Buck before a Cubs-Cardinals game, they invariably tell him: "We know who you're pulling for."

"It's good-natured, like the rivalry," Buck said.

Buck did grow up around the Cardinals because of his late father, Jack, the Hall of Fame announcer. And while he still does local play-by-play on a handful of Cardinals games, he says it's not accurate to call him a fan.

"I'm beyond all that stuff," he said. "I root for great matchups and great games."

Buck recalled that in 2003, while he and Tim McCarver called the ALCS for Fox, he was captivated by the Cubs-Marlins playoff series. While driving from Boston to New York between games, he desperately tried to get a clear signal on the radio.

"We were rising and falling with every pitch like 10-year-old fans," he said. "That scene at Wrigley, with all the fans on the street at Waveland, I was so jealous. … The energy that comes out of that place is incredible, let alone in October. I hope one day to be a part of that."

Buck believes this could be the year. He has been high on the Cubs since chatting with former Fox colleague Lou Piniella during batting practice last week before a Cubs-Cardinals game.

"Now it looks like I'm a front-runner," Buck said, referring to the Cubs' dash into first place Thursday. "But after visiting with Lou, seeing that look in his eyes, that confidence, I believe he can have the same effect on the Cubs as Jim Leyland did with the Tigers. [Piniella's arrival] not only translates into wins now, it can change the entire direction of the organization."

Buck, who will call Saturday's Mets-Cubs game for Fox (2:55 p.m., WFLD-Ch. 32), believes the Cubs are determined to acquire one more bat, though that player would have to clear waivers.

"Maybe someone for the No. 5 spot, someone with a presence, probably an outfielder," Buck said. "Cliff Floyd and Jacque Jones are two guys I've always liked, but I wonder if they can't add a third guy to the center-right field mix. Not to make the playoffs, but for loftier goals."

Incredible misplay by Soriano. If he was a wide reciever he'd run to a spot 10 yards from where the damn ball lands.

Christ.

Wow replace Soriano with Murton and I bet we'll win alot more games. Soriano is a horrible LF. What is that 10 errors in his last 10 games? Lou should bench this overrated whiner.
