It's Jeff Samardzija bobble-head day in Boise.

Did anybody know Shark had his own blog? Here's his entry from yesterday:

8/2/07

Overall just a great night last night.

Felt really good with my outing, and starting to really feel like a big league pitcher. Had great command throughout the game and got ahead of a lot of guys 0-2 and 1-2. I believe I was sailing through 4 innings, then finally gave up a hit and a baserunner in the 4th. Slider was working even when I was behind in the count, and the two-seamer was diving away nicely. A pretty cool part of last night was that Coach Mainieri made the trip up to watch me throw. For those of you that dont know, Coach Mainieri was my baseball coach at ND. Coach is a great guy who I owe a lot of my baseball success to. Felt great to perform well in front of him and the rest of the ND fans last night.

In the end I gave up 3 hits and 2 runs in my last appearance in A ball. Yep, Ill see you in Tennessee. My brother is flying down to pick up the car and drive that baby up to Tenn, while Im jumping a flight up this morning. Needless to say Im pretty excited about the promotion and ready to keep working towards my goal.

Like I mentioned early this year...stay tuned.

Donnie Veal: 4 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 3 K/0 BB. The hit (who scored the lone run of Donnie) was a triple in the first that came on a misplayed flyball by Issmael Salas. Veal's ERA is below 5 for the first time all season.

Rough 5th for Veal as he gives up a 2-run HR. 5 IP, 3 ER, 3 H, 3 K/1 BB, HR. Donnie's ERA is back above 5.

Soto goes yard in the first (his 18th) and Iowa leads it 1-0 after 1.

Very temporary! 6 earned runs in 6 innings, 5.23 ERA.

Ugh, awful 5th and 6th innings for Veal to end his little streak of good starts.

My God, what does he have to do to earn a job on the Cubs.

Another real strong outing from Sean Gallagher at AAA - 7 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 5 K/0 BB.

Boy am I glad we gave Marquis that 3 year deal. I think right now, Gallagher would put up better numbers than Marquis and for a whole hell lot cheaper. Chalk this up as another one of Jim Hendrys finest...

I'm pretty excited that Matt Craig is back for Iowa. He played 3B, walked 2 times and scored a run. It's not like Iowa needed to get any better, but he improves the team immensely.

Anyone know why Felix got the night off?

I think it was just because Richie played C, Soto played 1B and Fox was pushed to RF.

And has something gotten in to Daytona's RF Ryan Harvey?

He went 3 for 4 with a R today and raised his average to .222

Who would've been starting from April thru June had we not had Marquis?

Guzman possibly. I know he is hurt right now, but who knows if he would have been had he been starting regularly. I just hate the fact they gave Marquis a 3 year deal, when we have some kids in the minors who project to be better starters than he is.

He needs to start showing he can make a lot more outs. That's the number one requirement for a Cubs' catcher.

That kid has been hurt every year.

That's the train of thought that led us to last year's rotation. I'm as big a proponent as anyone of letting young guys get playing time, but at the same time, there's always attrition and ineffectiveness that goes on in the starting rotation. In the offseason you had health question marks for Prior, Miller, Guzman, Mateo, and Marshall. Gallagher didn't have any real success beyond Daytona, and the only other option on the 40 man was Samardzija. To not add another starter was an invitation for the carousel of disaster starts that was the bottom half of the rotation last year.

There was still no reason to give a 3 year deal to somebody as bad as Marquis.

And Marquis has sucked basically every year, so Id rather take my chances with a young kid, then hand out a 3 yr 21 million dollar deal for a terrible pitcher.

That kid has been hurt every year.

No thanks, I'd take Marquis.

Guzman will never approach what Marquis has done.

Marquis is at least extremely durable, and as TT pointed out, during the winter the Cubs needed someone with some durability. We can debate the contract all day long, but whats done is done.

They needed someone in that #5 starter spot who could give them innings. Guzman could not have done that.
