As of this particular moment, the Cubs and Dodgers are both tied with a .001 percentage point advantage over milwaukee in a 3-way tie for first in the wild card.

To add to this, the Phillies are currently the sixth place team in the wild card race, at a mere 1.5 games back.

Technically, the Cubs are first in the division, and thus have nothing to do with the wild card picture. The Dodgers are temporarily in first, pending the outcome of tonight's game.

Taking jabs at a Brewer fan, saying how it was undeniable the Cubs would take over, he tells me,

"Well, the Cubs last game of the year will be the last game of the regular season like it is every year."

To which I respond:

"Haven't the Brewers not had a winning season since 1992? And haven't they not even made the playoffs since 1982?"

Very knowledgable fans.

With the way the Brewers started the season I didn't think that 8 games over .500 would put the Cubs in first. But I'll take it.

GO CUBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even still, we'd be half a game out of the wildcard if we weren't leading the divsion, so our record is plenty good for this time of year.

What do you expect him to say when you're taking jabs at him? Anyway, August 1st and we're percentage points up is no time to celebrate, unless you enjoy having the shoe put on the other foot and shoved up your arse.

Am I celebrating because the race is over? No. It's just begining. But celebrating making up 8.5 games in a 2 month span? I think that is definately something to be proud of.

Enjoy the day, as I am. But understand that we could be back in 2nd place by end of tonight. When we are 5 or 6 up going into September, then I'll know this is real and not just hopeful thinking.

I still don't think the Cubs have all the ingredients they need to be as successful as they can be in the playoffs. I'm hoping that Jim wanted to get Griffey or Dye, but the asking price was too much. I'm hoping that we are not at our budget's limit.

Here's a fun coincidence:

The Cubs took over first place on Aug 1 1984 by beating the Phillies 5-4(*) at Wrigley. They even scored the winning run walkoff style ... but a walkoff sac fly, not WP.

They never gave up first place for the rest of the year.

(*) actually this was the first game of a DH which they swept, and they officially took over first place after the 2nd game.

There is a lot of "Gods tempting" going on around here.

Some folks will never learn.

This is really all I'm saying. It's now Aug. 2nd, 2 months to go. I understand being happy with what we have accomplished and all, but it won't mean squat unless we can close the deal.

Luckily, fans have no impact on the outcome of games and are allowed to celebrate early and get ahead of themselves as much as they want.

Now that the whole "first place" thing has sunk in a little bit, are you as surprised as I at how quickly the Cubs turned their season around?

Exactly two months ago, Lou melts down on the way to the Cubs 6th straight loss. They were nine games under .500 and 8 1/2 games (approximately) behind the Brewers. Now they're tied for first.

I'm trying to recall a Cubs team in my memory going back to the early 70's that's had such a turnaround. Can't think of a single one.

Amazing.

A small RynoRules attended both of those games.

Damn. Maybe I should've worded that differently..

Not really, their run differential has always been really good (for the NL), it just took a while for their W/L record to catch up.

A very cheap point for me. No doubt.

I have just seen too many times when the Cubs see a little daylight and fans get cocky only to see the dark clouds of despair slam shut. I'd love to try something different this year.
