Craig, if you're around, I read in the Idaho Statesman today that Al Aburqurque is in the mid-90s with his FB this season with a slider that is topping out at 87. Very, very encouraging. Of course the same story said that Huseby is in the 88-92 range. Hopefully the Statesman is wrong on that one and the Boise announcer is right with Huseby.

Thanks much, Cal. That's great news for AlAl, even if not for Huseby.

OK, I'll add him to my real talent list, possible reliever or trade bait someday. His perfrormance lately has been more jazzy, 14 K's in his last two outings, 8 K's in 3 innings last time, even if he did allow 3 runs.

So, you are vindicated that he has something. His Peoria output and Nathan's report certainly didn't reflect any 95 mph fastball. But, fortunately things change.

Well,

I won't go into too much detail b/c if you read Raisin's updates you know the story.

Wood was missing the zone quite a bit but was overall effective. He was consistently in the 94-92 range with his fastball and his breaking ball was breaking pretty good.

Overall, he looked ok. He left right after he pitched. I guess up to Chicago.

Some other notes,

Colvin cannnot weigh more than 160 pounds, but he hit a HR. He was then taken out in the 6th inning and I don't know why. O'Malley was sharp but there wasn't a lot of talent on the field tonight for the D-Jacks.

Mark Pawelek back in Boise and looking good out of the pen.

seems the entire Boise squad takes a buttload of walks. is this a NW league phenomena or something we have all been waiting to see?

also, sure it's just A-ss, but Kyler Burke is looking like a nice pickup. added a double after the dinger.

cal, have you heard anything on Boise's Santana? He had 6 K's in his 2 otherwise ineffective innings yesterday. His performance has been spotty at times, but there have been days when his line looks pretty good. Is this a guy who's got a pretty good arm? If in some future year his performance was consistently good, is it possible that he's got a major-league arm if he were to end up with major-league control?

Petty interesting to have Pawelek back, and to have a rare no-walk outing.

Maybe the Cubs decided they are sick and tired of seeing the dog crap that is Jacque Jones playing CF and decided to call up Colvin.

By the way, Colvin has 14 BB in 384 plate appearances. His arms should be huge by now with all that swinging.

He'd give you probably a .240 BA with a .240 OBP and about a .500 OPS.

Truth be told, I don't know much about him. AZ Phil seemed to like him during extended spring training, though. He said he had a nice arm and he seemed to have nice results at ExST, so I'm guessing he at least throws above 90 with something nice offspeed.

Is Alberto Cabrera hurt? He hasn't pitched since the 23rd.

Yeah, I think so. But I don't think it's too serious because he was scratched the day of his scheduled start (on Kuly 28th) and he's still not on the 7-day DL.

IowaCubs.com"]Bees Buzz Cubs for 8-5 Comeback Win Tuesday

Cubs Squander 5-1 Advantage

By Deene Ehlis / http://www.iowacubs.com

Salt Lake rallied from a 5-1 deficit to defeat the Iowa Cubs 8-5 Tuesday night at Franklin Covey Field in Salt Lake City. The Cubs lost three out of four to the Bees and finished 3-5 on their eight game road trip.

Iowa now trails Nashville by 7 1/2 game in the American North as the Sounds shutout Sacramento 2-0.

The Cubs got early homeruns from Joe Simokaitis and Geovany Soto to build a 5-1 lead.

Salt Lake rallied for two runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and Nick Gorneault smashed a three run homer down the right field line in the seventh to give the Bees an 8-5 lead. Cubs manager Buddy Bailey noted the Angels' organization wide offensive strategy, "They were very aggresive swinging at the first pitch and got themselves back in. We didn't really make any adjustments and it didn't take them many pitches to get back into the game. When they're that aggressive, maybe we could have made a few adjustments. I think we were throwing the right pitches, we just didn't locate them."

Gorneault's game winning homerun came off Billy Petrick, now 1-1 with Iowa. The Cubs rallied in the ninth, getting runners to first and third. However, Geovany Soto, batting as the tying run, struck out. The teams combined for 30 hits, thirteen for Iowa.

Joe Simokaitis had three hits and John Nelson finished one for four to extend a hitting streak to eight. Eric Patterson and Felix Pie finished a combined three for 31 in the series against Salt Lake.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies control Diamond Jaxx in 5-2 win

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies (56-51, 20-19) broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the sixth inning, and went on to beat the Diamond Jaxx (47-62, 16-23) 5-2 in the fourth game of a five-game series at Pringles Park.

Both teams traded runs early in the game. The Smokies' Nate Spears ignited a two-run third with a triple to start off the inning. The Diamond Jaxx' Prentice Redman would counter in the fifth with a two-run home run off Smokies starter Ryan O'Malley.

The Smokies' Tyler Colvin smacked a lead-off homer in the sixth inning off losing pitcher Joe Woerman (5-6) to give the Smokies a 3-2 lead. Issmael Salas followed with a double down the left-field line. After Woerman struckout Kyle Reynolds for the first out, Alan Rick was intentionally walked to setup a potential double play. Robinson Chirinos foiled the strategy by hitting a two-run triple into the alley in right-center, giving the Smokies a 5-2 lead.

Chicago Cub right-hander Kerry Wood came in out of the bullpen with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to help hold the lead. Wood walked Erick Monzon, but then retired the next five batters in a row. He finished the night going 1 2/3 innings, allowing no runs or hits with a walk and one strikeout on 24 pitches.

Grant Johnson pitched a scoreless ninth inning to nail down his second save of the season. O’Malley (2-0) picked up the win for the Smokies, allowing two runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Caps Beat Renshaw, Chiefs 7-3

Comstock Park, MI – The Peoria Chiefs allowed seven runs in the first four innings and fell to the West Michigan Whitecaps 7-3 Tuesday night. The Chiefs are now 1-1 on the roadtrip and 23-14 on the second half.

After the Chiefs left a runner on base in the top of the first, West Michigan took an early lead. Gorkys Hernandez doubled down the third base line with one out. James Skleton blooped a single into left and Clark Hardman threw a rocket to the plate. Catcher Wellington Castillo appeared to tag Hernandez before the runner touched the plate, but Hernandez was called safe for a 1-0 Whitecaps lead.

West Michigan added to their lead in the second when Brandon Timm doubled home Jordan Newton. In the third, Hernandez led off with a double and moved to third on an errant pick off throw by Chiefs starter Jake Renshaw. An error by first baseman Blake Lalli allowed Hernandez to score and a wild pitch by Renshaw put two in scoring position. West Michigan made it 4-0 on a RBI groundout from Jordan Newton before the Chiefs ended the inning.

The Whitecaps broke the game open in the fifth and knocked Renshaw from the game. Timm led off with a double and scored on a single by Audy Ciriaco. After a double play, Hernandez hit a solo homer to left field his fourth of the season. All-Star James Skelton hit the next pitch out of the park to right field for a solo shot, his fifth of the season. Renshaw was replaced by reliever Michael Bartek who got out of the inning with a popup.

Peoria finally got on the board against Whitecaps hurler Matt O’Brien in the sixth inning. With one out, Brian Leclerc drew a walk and moved to second on a throwing error by Joe Tucker. Jim Adduci singled to left to load the bases as Ryne Malone moved up to second. Derek Schermerhorn put the Chiefs on the board with a two-run single to center before Lalli bounced into an inning ending double play.

Peoria added a run to knock O’Brien from the game in the eighth. With one out, Leclerc singled and came around to score on a double by Ryne Malone. Malone moved to third on a groundout, but Casey Fien relieved O’Brien and struck out Schermerhorn to end the threat.

Renshaw lasted just 3 2/3 innings and allowed a season high seven runs on nine hits. The All-Star walked two, struck out two and allowed two solo homers to the last two batters he faced. Bartek didn’t allow a hit in his 2 1/3 innings of work. The righthander hit a batter and struck out two. Jayson Ruhlman did not allow a run while giving up one hit and striking out two in two innings of work.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Derek Schermerhorn (3B) – Schermerhorn got the Chiefs on the board with a bases loaded, two-run single in the sixth inning. He finished 1-for-4 with two RBI.

BoiseHawks.com"]Hawks Can't Overcome Fast Tri-City Start

PASCO, WA The Tri-City Dust Devils beat the Boise Hawks 14-10 Tuesday night. The Hawks scored seven runs in the sixth inning to give the Devils a scare, but the pitching finally took control of the game ending the scoring and the Hawks lost their third game in a row.

Ty Wright hit a grand slam in the Hawk's seven run sixth inning. He also drove in two with a base hit in the third inning. Mark Sawyer and Jonathan Wyatt both had three hits for the Hawks and Kyler Burke had a home run and a double and Tony Thomas also homered. But the Hawks could not overcome a nine run second inning when the Dust Devils sent 15 batters to the plate to take a 9-1 lead.

By the by, from what Oneri said, it sounds like Pawelek is headed to the Boise rotation really soon. Probably for strike zone-allergic Julio Castillo.

DFE Cedric Redmond has been on fire in his last 3 apperances for Mesa - 9 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 12 K/1 BB.

BAPR Plus Blog"]When the Cubs signed 2006 27th rounder Cedric Redmond as a draft and follow, they knew he would be a work in progress with some intriguing potential thanks to a fastball that touches 94-95 mph. The righthander gave up eight runs in his first two pro innings but since then he’s thrown nine scoreless innings for the AZL Cubs, striking out 12 while allowing only three hits and one walk. He struck out six in three hitless innings yesterday to pick up his third win.
