He's 34 years old and currently has an under .700 OPS. Why would you want him and jones on the same team?

I don't. I'd trade Jones for Payton.

And I'm still not understanding people's problem with Theriot. Assuming we can add one bat, I think we are fine.

I don't have a problem with Theriot. I have a problem with being satisfied having 4 holes in the lineup. I'd be fine with Theriot, just as long as something happens to improve the lineup elsewhere. Just remember, the Cubs are 9th in the NL in OPS, they are, at best, an average lineup. Since it takes a lot more than average to be a great team, and I want the Cubs to be a great team, I'm not going to be happy with average, or worse, production.

True, but SS is not the realistic upgrade. We all know Hendry is not going to get another MI. We need to focus on an OF.

I don't buy much of the "realistic upgrade" talk. The Cubs have 4 holes, on the plus side, that leaves them with several options to find improvements. A good GM should be able to find something out there to improve what is 4 good sized holes in the lineup. I don't care where it comes from at this point, I just feel like they have to get it.

I fully understand your point, but wouldn't you rather have Theriot at SS and a new CF than (??) at SS and Jones/Pagan in CF?

But Pagan has been pretty solid against LHP.

Either way, Pagan is still out producing him this year. You'd be in the same situation you are now with Jones/Pagan instead it would be Payton/Pagan.

Its pointless.

Thats if Baltimore would even want Jones.

Don't let a hot streak fool you. He's a 5th OF.

Yeah, but if he's only playing against LHP, that's fine with me.

We MAY be able to win this division by standing pat offensively, but I can guaran-damn-tee you that we won't get very far in the playoffs without another big bat.

Do you honestly think that the Cardinals where the best team last year? The Marlins in 2003? Let's just get to the playoffs and take our chances.

the marlins had the best record in the NL (IIRC) in the second half of 2003. it wasn't just luck, they were a good team. their pitching was dominant. and yes, they got a little luck as most teams need to win in the playoffs.

however, how often does a mediocre team like the 2006 cardinals win the world series? it's very rare. there's no reason for the Cubs to stand pat with the glaring holes they currently have, unless there just really truly is nobody available, which i don't believe.

Its not a hot streak. His SLG was .524 in May, .425 in June and .462 in July.

34 yr old Payton is not an upgrade.

Consitent. Months.

Look them up, he's been pretty consistent since his callup in May.

Gomes OBP is in the mid .320s and he was just sent down to Durham.

He's got an .821 OPS, and it's not his fault Tampa is stupid and sent him down. All that means is that he should be easy to get.

I'd take a flyer on him if the price was right. Maybe not for this year but certainly for next.

Except for his SLG%, which is what we need to upgrade. That's gone way down since May.

absolutely. but there are two months to go. we'll see. i think the point remains, they have holes that can be filled and should try to get better.

Going back to the start of the hot streak (day after Lou's ejection and suspension) I believe the Cubs have the best record in all of baseball, not just the NL.

it isnt that this team doesnt have holes. its that no one AVAILABLE!!! you think cincy isnt going to demand hill or pie and gallagher(and more) for either dunn or griffey. dunn then turns into a fa after this year, and griffey has a lot of contract dollars left. also, cincy is going to be reluctant anyway to trade griffey 15 hrs away from 600. jay payton is awful, tori hunter is a pipe dream, ryan church is underperforming pagan, atl will not trade renteria,

this team may have flaws, but they have also been the best team in baseball for TWO MONTHS. i want more power in the outfield but at what cost? and even if we are willing to pay, those teams might not pull the trigger anyway.

btw hendry had a deal with zambrano done, he is blameless for not getting z signed.

Is it fair to say that this isn't a hot streak anymore, the Cubs are just good?

It has been almost 2 months.

Do they? I know it was best in baseball for a while, starting from the June 3 date, or maybe it was some other date. But I guess it depends on what you are calling the halfway point, either game 81 or the ASB. They have the same record as Philly post-ASB.

He's done enought to not be replaced by Jay Payton. I also didn't realize how good his numbers are at home.

.306/.389/.581.

And they flat-out sucked for 2 months, so which Cubs team is the real one?

I think so; I didn't mean to imply that it was temporary with my wording. I only meant that I think they're currently the hottest team in all of baseball, not just the NL.
