If he hits a HR in every game the rest of the season, I'll agree. Heck, I'll even take a HR in every other game.

If the Giants start dumping players for prospects, two guys who could help the Cubs immediately are lefty reliever Steve Kline and lefty pinch hitter Mark Sweeney. They’re both specialists and both have playoff experience.

Sweeney OK, Kline never in a million years.

Cubs: Griffey, Renteria

Braves: Arroyo

Reds: Theriot, Murton, Kroeger, Veal, Hart

I'm not even sure that prospect package alone would be enough to get Griffey, much less Griffey and Renteria.

Well, Bruce Miles did say that the prices being asked were ridiculous. And if Mark Teixeira (for a two month rental, no less) cost Salty, Elvis, and another prospect, I shudder to think what the price would be for a Griffey (under control past this year) or Renteria (ditto).

Such as the deal below, for Arroyo (to spin to the Braves), Griffey, and Renteria. No way the prospects listed get a deal done. Not in a time when contracts are so bloated and talent so over-valued. A situation we helped create, mind you, by giving Soriano the contract we did. We might wind up with Griffey and Renteria on the team if we're willing to give up Pie, Gallagher, Marmol, and Veal (among others). Price is too high for my liking.

Teixeira is not a 2-month rental. They control him through next season.

And as a player at the beginning of his prime he's a much more valuable than both of those post 30 players who have been inconsistent in recent years.

Yeah, my read on this is we are going to do nothing, maybe add a minor piece but nothing big.

If it happens great, but I do think at this point we are beginning to see the effects of having the sale of the ballclub looming on the horizon.

Actually you've got it backwards.

MLB's escalating salaries work to inflate the values of the young/cheap guys we have, and would be giving up. Meanwhile those spiraling contracts make it harder to find $12M for Griffey, or $9M for Renteria, when your payroll is being gobbled up elsewhere.

Practically everyone around baseball is desperate for guys that can be solid, productive bigleaguers for the league minimum. We're giving up several such players in this deal. It may not be enough, but the value proposition is definitely a strong selling point.

My bad, I just recalled Tex being under a two year deal that ended this year and forgot that he's still under team control.

Still, I consider the price paid for Tex to be very high. Salty is a stud and plays a position that offense is hard to come by at. Not to downplay Tex but it isn't quite as hard to find a power hitting 1B. Added with a high ceiling like Andrus and two other prospects, with only a decent reliever in Mahay in addition, and the price is high.

Not saying that Griffey = Tex but I think the price wouldn't be that much different. Especially since, with Tex off the market, the talent pool just got a little smaller.

Just of note, but with deferred salary, Griffey is only making NPV like 9M a year and with Boston picking up some of the bill, Renteria is only making like 5M.
