For crying out loud, go beg, plead and scream at the Tribune Tower, scrape together every spare buck you have available, and get the suits to agree to a long-term deal extension for big Z **RIGHT NOW**. Seriously, get it done, that would be better than any trade scenario out there.

While I agree with getting him signed, there is noway in hell its the biggest need before the deadline. We already have Z, so whether or not he signs now or later doesnt matter. This team needs another bat big time, and that is the biggest deal a Cubs can make

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to say. This team has a serious chance to compete for a World Championship this year if they add another big bat. Standing pat and just resigning Z, albeit nice for the future, does nothing to improve our chances this year.

It's 100% mandatory that they find a way to re-sign Zambrano, no excuses, new owner or not. However, it's not important that it be done before the deadline.

Didn't most people on this board want Z gone after the fight with Barrett?
I don't know if I'd go as far as saying most, but a lot did.

As much as we drool or groan over some of the rumored deals, looking over the players available and the cost (in players and salary) to get them, the best deal might be to not make a deal.

LOL...funny how that changed so quickly.

I'll admit I'm one of the ones who wouldn't have minded seeing him traded at the time. The Cubs didn't look to be in contention and it looked like he was in a freefall. Now his claim about winning the Cy Young Award this year doesn't look so crazy after all.

It's not hard to change when the guy in question goes from an arrogant, teammate-fighting, not good pitcher back the fun, exciting Ace pitcher that he should always be.

He should be the leading candidate after today. Wonder how much teeth gnashing there is in the front office after not signing him to the very reasonable deal at the beginning of the season?

He's not anywhere near the Cy Young Award quite yet. He might not even be in the top 5 right now. If he keeps pitching like he has recently though, he could move up the ranks quickly.

Besides Penny, Young and Peavy, who is there?

I'd put Smoltz and John Maine definitely ahead of Z right now.

I'd probably put Z slightly ahead of guys like Oliver Perez, Brandon Webb, Tim Hudson, Noah Lowry, and Ted Lilly-mainly because while all those people have better ERA's than Z, Z's wins, strikeouts, and IP will probably put him in better contention for the Cy Young than any of them.

I dunno...it's just like college football...If you are going to lose a game do it early. Z has been the one of the best pitchers in baseball over the last couple of months.

I agree, with "quite yet" being the key words. He has the momentum which, if it continues, will very possibly have him there at the end of the year. I don't think it's a bit coincidental that his surge is happening at the same time the Cubs' is.

I guess I'm in the 1% of Cub fans that would still be open to trading Z in the next day or two for a big haul of promising youngsters.

Even though I recognize that is certain not to happen.

And you want Jim Hendry engineering that deal? I'll pass. :D

Am I the only one that's just a little pissed that Big Boy stunk it up for most of the first two months of the season. Then he makes a statement that as of his next start, he's going to start the season over and pitch like he is capable, and actually does. Now don't get it twisted, I love that Z has turned his season around, but c'mon the season starts the first of April, not the first of June. If he is able to flip a switch, and turn his stuff on as it appears, what in the hell was he doing until June 6th?

Not to mention the folks that were absolutely, 100% convinced that Zambrano had an injured shoulder and that he was just gutting it out to start after start to keep his FA chances from diminishing. It just couldn't have been that he just needed to tweak his mechanics, as was suggested by others. Nope, no way.

Fickle.

Yea, people who decided to ignore all of his seasons with the Cubs since 2003 and focus on 2 bad months.

Yeah, nobody possibly had any potentially legit and thought reasons to trade Zambrano at the time. It was all kneejerk hyperbole. Boy, you guys sure have everyone covered. All the trade ideas had to do with him fighting Barrett and nothing else.
