Dunn

The Cincinnati Reds will also be looking to unload left fielder Adam Dunn (27 homers, 67 RBIs), who has drawn the attention of the Padres, a team in desperate need of offensive help.

The Diamondbacks' preference is to add players whom they can control beyond this season rather than rent for two months. Still, they've shown mild interest in the Reds' Adam Dunn, a left fielder who also could play first base.

Dunn's contract allows him to become a free agent at the end of the season if he is traded, diminishing his trade value. The Nationals like Dunn, but he appears to be a backup plan — at best — for most contenders.

Dunn, who turns 28 on Nov. 29, could provide needed power to the Padres and Angels as well as the Diamondbacks.

Castillo to Mets?

The Mets are looking for a second baseman, but only if they believe it's a strong defensive upgrade over Ruben Gotay. The top name on their wish list is Minnesota's Luis Castillo, a former Gold Glove winner who also could help them offensively in the No. 2 spot in the batting order. The problem is, the Twins haven't yet decided to give up on their season and trade veterans, so for now Castillo's not available. One team official said all of the available second basemen were "offensive guys," and they believe they already have that in Gotay, who's batting .333.

They have checked in on Kansas City's Mark Grudzielanek, but they're worried about the health of his legs, and they're not sure they're comfortable with his 2008 contract option kicking in at $4 million once he gets to 500 plate appearances. They've also talked to the White Sox about Tadahito Iguchi.

On the bullpen front, the Mets continue to push the Washington Nationals on Chad Cordero and Jon Rauch, but there's some doubt now whether the Nats will be making many trades at all. After signing second baseman Ronnie Belliard to a two-year contract extension last week, Washington was working yesterday to finalize a new two-year deal with first baseman Dmitri Young, whom many thought would be available at the deadline.

If I were the Cubs, I would seriously look into getting Cordero from the Nats, and then turn around and look to move Dempster or Howry to another contender for prospects.

The D-Backs would almost certainly have to give up Upton, imo.

no clue what the dads would have to give up.

Upton for Dunn would be a horrible deal for the D-Backs. I would actually ask Cinci for more, I don't care that Dunn is proven.

If you think Dempster has cardiac-inducing saves, you ain't seen nothing until "The Chief" takes the mound.

Yeah, no way. I love Dunn, but Upton is the most untouchable minor leaguer. We are only talking about 2 months of Dunn folks, theres no way Cinci is going to get the Moon.

I don't think the D'backs would even consider giving up arguable the top minor league prospect for a rental of Dunn.

If I recall correctly, I believe I read that the D'backs are even against trading Chris Young. Although I can't remember where I read/heard that.

But, they might be able to get Carlos Quentin and a good pitching prospect.....someone along the lines of Greg Smith (LHP). With Harang, Bailey & Arroyo they probably could use a left hander and someone like Smith might be able to crack the rotation next season.
