The Cleveland Plain Dealer[/url]"]The Indians are on the verge of acquiring Rangers outfielder Kenny Lofton, a source said Friday afternoon.

An official announcement could be made later today.

It's uncertain whom the Indians are giving up in the trade.

Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro and Assistant General Manager Chris Antonetti could not be reached.

I just came here to post it, figured I'd have been the first.

Either way, damn it. Lofton would have been an enormous asset to this team.

Oh...we're in on this deal...They just got Lofton to replace Sizemore who they are trading to us for Pie, Eyre and Jones.

If he could've been had for a minor leaguer, from Single A at that, JH should have been all over that. I don't know how valuable Ramirez is, but something tells me we could have made a better offer. Edited by rickrolled

Apparently the Rangers got a single A catcher with a 900+ OPS for him. His name is Max Ramirez.

Man, if we're not going to give Soto a chance we might as well have traded him for Lofton.

Platooning with Jason Michaels, perhaps.

Ramirez was the player who was traded from the Braves to the Indians last July for Bob Wickman.

His bat is supposed to make him a major leaguer whichever position he plays, but there are doubts if he can remain a catcher or not.

John Sickels has him ranked as the 11th best Indians prospect, a B-, and says that his glove is shaky but he loves the bat.

So basically, this guy is a better Jake Fox who has at least a chance of staying behind the plate if he improves.

I'd rather have Soto than Lofton. We still have until Tuesday to come up with some cogs. I like the Matt Stairs rumor. I also think Murton and Pie can be valuable in August/September callups.

Nothing personal, but that would have been a horrendous move.

it would be a something for nothing deal

But it assumes that the Cubs wil not give Soto a shot. How do we know that? Just b/c they acquired Kendall for almost nothing and in all likelihood will allow him to walk after this year?

that's what he said, he's operating under that assumption. whether or not they actually give him a shot is another thing altogether

I understand that, but my point is that his assumption is flawed.

The fact Soto was sent down in favor of Hill is a clue.

Teams value Hill or atleast the D'backs did and the Cubs do.

This has probably already been mentioned somewhere, but the D'backs protected Koyie Hill keeping him on the 40 man roster a couple of years back.

The story I heard was they were debating whether to not have Hill or Dan Uggla as the 40th man protected. The D'backs decided to protect Hill and the Marlins selected Uggla.

a strict reading of Tomy23's post would have to take note of the conditional word "if." consider the two possible meanings:

A) since it is a fact that the Cubs will not give Soto a shot, they should have traded him for Lofton

B) if it is true that the Cubs will not give Soto a shot, they should have traded him for Lofton

If we assume that Tomy23 uses language precisely, the correct way to read his post is to understand him as advancing claim B, not claim A. If Tomy23 advances claim B and not claim A, it is obvious that he hasn't assumed that Soto will never be given a chance.

If we assume that Tomy23 does not use language precisely, we are left with a 50-50 choice between options A and B. Don't you think it seems unkind to assume that he made the dumber choice, particularly when you yourself are so willing to criticize others for making assumptions?
